LF: Protection Engineer (Fort McMurray)
JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Manager of Transmission & Distribution Services (T&DS), the position is responsible for applying protection and power system engineering principles, utility standards/practices and power system analysis skills towards ensuring the safe operation of the Transmission & Distribution protection system, maintaining a secure operating environment and solving complex technical problems.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES- Investigate the performance of the protection system following a disturbance and prepare Fault And Disturbance reports
- Perform Root Cause Analysis for major protection system events and review and approve protective relaying field testing procedures
- Support the development of the relay maintenance program
- Develop and review Protection & Control Standards including the preparation of application drawing templates, setting guidelines and protection philosophies
- Evaluate new and existing protection schemes including relay settings, three-lines diagrams, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams
- Prepare Engineering Work Packages for ongoing relay replacement initiative and analysis and sign-off of protective relaying testing and commissioning results
- Conduct conventional power system analysis using ETAP, PSSE and other analysis software; Evaluate analysis results and prepare written report of findings, recommendations and improvement opportunities
- Perform contingency analysis for planned outages required for equipment maintenance and the integration of new facility and coordinate with stakeholders to secure outages.
- Provide technical engineering leadership, direction, technical and functional guidance Junior Engineers
- Assist Electrical Compliance interpret regulatory standards, rules, and policies from Operation and Maintenance stand point.
- Support the inclusion of protection system details into the operator training module
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
- Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer or equivalent
- Minimum 5 to 10 years of related utility Protection & Control experience with progressive responsibility in power system operations
- Experience in transmission and distribution system protection and management schemes (i.e. IMS/RAS), relay selection, settings development, operational analysis, communication systems and maintenance practices for transmission, distribution, and generation protection applications
Skills and Knowledge:- Good knowledge of power system analytical techniques and modeling
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships
- Working knowledge of the electrical utility technical requirements and standards
- Demonstrated leadership, team building, communications, mentoring, interpersonal, conflict management skills, time management skills and problem solving skills
- Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite and Engineering software (i.e. ETAP & PSS/E)
- Ability to work in a high-pressure environment
WORKING CONDITIONS- This position requires relocation to Fort McMurray and is NOT a camp role
- This is a dayshift role working Monday to Friday
