Rangers considering Richards buyout
Was listening to hockey central and Kypreos (who probably is still somewhat connected in NY) mentioned the Rangers are considering buying out Richards this summer.
Podcast link, it's about 33-34min in: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/fan59...-8--Monday.mp3
Can't even imagine how bad a situation the Flames would be in if he had signed here.

You'd think they'll eventually learn and fire Sather already.

Richards locked in at $7.2M for 7-8 more years in Calgary would have been a nightmare.
I always appreciated Feaster's attempts to get the Flames that #1C they needed to pair with Iggy but we sure are lucky that both failed. Richards would be an unmovable contract and RoR would have devestated the team for years robbing the Flames of their draft pick and not having the player.
I wonder if Feaster will take another shot at Richards this summer? If Lecavilier is also bought out will Feaster try and bring both to Calgary? Both players are post-apex but at the same time Feaster says one thing and does another all the time.

A two or three year deal for Richards would be good. 2-3.5 a year maybe. My guess is that if he does get bought out though, he will sign in the east still.
EDIT: The short term signing of a "post-apex" player would help get the team by until the prospects are ready to come up.
It will be an interesting off-season in the NHL with the cap droppping. Lots of good players will become available.

I was supportive of Feaster chasing Richards as I thought he and Iginla would have been awesome together. Richard's age and the length of the contract were concerning, but I was wrapped up in the thought of Iginla getting a #1 center to play with.
Dodged a bullet. Thank you Sather (didn't he save us from Redden too?).

He's got 23 points in 37 games. That's worth more than 1 million a year. 3 million a year would be acceptable.. he's no Gomez, lol.

Getting Richards for a short contract would be worth it just help our future center coming in. I think sheltered minutes will be needed to make sure they aren't thrown to the wolves.

Even if he was playing up to expectations, it would've been a dumb move for the Flames. Never could wrap my head around why some people were clamoring for another 30+ player on team that was clearly going downhill anyway.

That contract was never going to turn out well.
I'm glad Feaster didn't manage to land Richards when he offered basically the same contract.
Although, I suppose on the positive side, maybe we could have moved him this deadline for a 1st/2nd rounder and some dubious prospects nobody's ever heard of.

Richards is still likely going to get 5 years at $4-5M at least. He will also likely sign with a team that is a legit contender. If he wanted to stay in his NY home he could probably sign with the Devils or Islanders. Toronto will take him as well.

I think this is Kypreos talking just to hear himself once again...absolutely no reason the Rangers would need to do this nevermind the amount of money it would cost them.

I'm worried that Feaster will one day be successful with of these types of moves (O'Reilly, Richards).

Yup, I was all about it while it was happening, but with sober reflection, we dodged a major bullet.
That being said, I don't think they buy him out.

O'Reilly would have been great if we had actually got him. Without the waiver fiasco we'd all be happy with the move.

I don't think I would be happy about giving the Av's our 2013 first round top 5 pick and our 3rd for ROR.

Has any GM ever got the amount of do-overs he's been given over the years of bad contracts to Gomez, Redden, Drury, etc. He got lucky a few times when teams like the Flames and Habs save his ass but it's kind of getting ridiculous.
Anyone that believes the Flames always get the shaft need only look at how lucky they were to dodge that bullet. That said I've always considered Richards somewhat overrated.

Speak for yourself. It was always a bad contract and not worth the compensation to the Avs even before the fiasco.
