Default Iceland wants the loonie - Canada to say it's OK

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...rticle2356634/

Iceland is looking into using the Canadian Dollar because the Krona appears to be permanently deflated. Canada's ambassador is going to tell Iceland that we are fine with that, provided they understand the dangers of not being able to set their own interest rates.

Regardless, it won't have much of an impact on us... except that we won't need to get foreign currency when visiting Iceland!

I can't wait for our new line of Bjork quarters to come out.

They might be even weirder than some of the ones we've already got.

Speaking of which, can we get rid of the term "Dollar" and replace it with "Loonie?" I want to have 20 loonie bills instead of 20 dollar bills.

It's not really our choice anyway, any country could adopt our currency if they really wanted to. There isn't really anything we could do about it. They'd just start circulating Canadian dollars.

It is interesting that a foreign country would be interesting in adopting the loonie when it's far less liquid than the USD or Euro, and is tied directly to oil prices (which Iceland isn't really an exporter of).

That said, it doesn't hurt us in anyway. Go for it if they want to.

Would they have to get it from Canadian circulations so the print is consistent and prevents and cleaver loopholes one could do?

could we somehow exploit this as a way to enter a second hockey team at the Olympics? Canadian players under the Iceland flag?

They can't print it themselves, that would be counterfit just as if you did it. They also won't have the flexibility of "creating" more of their own money through quantative easing type central bank activity because only the Bank of Canada could do that sort of thing. That's the monetary policy flexibility they'd give up in exchange for having a more stable currency. For example, they would not be able to adjust domestic interest rates effectively. That's a big trade off and something that Iceland shouldn't ignore completely.

They'd have to receive the hard currency from Canada. That's relatively easy to do though, there is no restriction (well, limited restrictions) on financial institutions shipping CAD around the world.

Just hopefully the ship carrying a billion $20's doesn't go down in the North Atlantic...

If Mighty Ducks has taught me anything, it's that you don't mess with a team from Iceland.

After what Iceland went through to get away from IMF and World Bank interference, i can see why they would want to stay away from the Euro or the US Dollar

The beginning to getting an 11th province perhaps?

On second thought, nevermind...they'll just want to separate in a few years anyway...

We both got hot girls and speak English. Why would they want to separate?

If anything why is it taking them so long to join the Dominion of Canada?

Most of our hot girls are Montreal strippers.

We should only let them have it if they rename their country Greenland, so we can rename Greenland, Iceland.

CBC did a show on this a month ago and the Minister of Finance or some such title from Iceland said it was all just a rumour and not planned or being considered. If I have learned anything from politicians it is that denial is the first step towards acting.

Sadly, the presence of these in Iceland is highly overstated. They have some, but much to my chagrin not nearly as many as I had allowed myself to believe they would have,.
