Here is his most recent blog post from 2 days ago where he announced he was stepping back a bit. Although it definitely didn't sound like he thought the end would be this soon.

The immediate reason for my "leave of presence" is my health. The "painful fracture" that made it difficult for me to walk has recently been revealed to be a cancer. It is being treated with radiation, which has made it impossible for me to attend as many movies as I used to.
Read more of his blog posts - he is a very good writer.
And I always like his reviews because he said he would review it with the intended audience in mind. If it was a Summer Blockbuster action flick he would review it as how he thought those people would enjoy it. If it was a chick flick, that would be different.
Good Luck Roger, I'll see you at the movies.

Damn. RIP Roger. Your reviews have sent me to many a great movie I might otherwise never have seen. Easily the reviewer I most trusted...well really the only one I trusted.
Condolences to Chaz and the rest of his family and friends.
Not only did I trust his movie reviews as he seemed to have the same taste that I had, I agreed with most of his politics as well. From wikipedia:
Quote:
A supporter of the Democratic Party,[97] Ebert publicly urged liberalfilmmakerMichael Moore to give a politically charged acceptance speech at the Academy Awards: "I'd like to see Michael Moore get up there and let 'em have it with both barrels and really let loose and give them a real rabble-rousing speech."[98] During a 2004 visit to The Howard Stern Show, Ebert predicted that the then-junior Illinois senator Barack Obama would be very important to the future of the country.[99] During a 1996 panel at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Conference on World Affairs, Ebert coined The Boulder Pledge, by which he vowed never to purchase anything offered through the result of an unsolicited email message, or to forward chain emails or mass emails to others.[100] He was critical of the Intelligent Design movement.[101] He has also stated that people who believe in either creationism or New Age beliefs such as crystal healing or astrology are not qualified to be President.[102] Regarding his belief system, he doesn't "want to provide a category for people to apply to [him]" because he "would not want [his] convictions reduced to a word" and states, "I have never said, although readers have freely informed me I am an atheist, an agnostic, or at the very least a secular humanist—which I am".[103] Ebert has also expressed disbelief in pseudoscientific or supernatural claims in general, calling them "woo-woo".[104]

All of his professional accomplishments aside, I have to respect how courageous he was in his fight. I am honestly not sure if I could endure what he did for as long as he did, and remain in the public eye as he did.
Remarkable courage.

Great critic. Movie reviews haven't been the same since Siskel passed away. I always liked Siskel a bit more, but I did appreciate that Ebert was able to appreciate some trash movies like Anaconda and Tomb Raider. Not many major critics would ever go on the line and give movies like those positive reviews.
I also still remember him giving Femme Fatale 4 stars basically just for the Rebecca Romain naked/lesbian scenes. It was an absolutely terrible movie, but those scenes were most definitely worth the price of admission.
I admired how he was able to proudly go back into the public and on TV after his disfiguring surgery. Not that people shouldn't, but it must be difficult.

I almost always check Roger's review before I choose to see a movie. Losing him is like losing a friend to me. RIP, Roger, and thanks for all your reviews throughout the years.
