Default UFA's- who's available this summer

So looks like we will have some money to spend, who is available and who do we want if we have money to burn?? with all our new NCAA players, thinking it will be years before we ever see them, if we see them

Stay away from UFAs.

You're rebuilding, you don't go sign a bunch of aging, expensive veterans, at least not in year one.

I agree.

The only way to rebuild properly is to have patience. If you tray accelerating it right off the bat, you just end up hurting yourself in the long run.

Plenty of interesting UFA options aged 25-30. I don't see why you don't try for those types of players who are still potentially getting better and can help for a few years.

I don't understand why rebuild has to mean sucking for five years. The Flyers had one disastrous season, stockpiled assets, signed some not over the hill UFA's, and got better the next year.

Weiss and Horton are about all that interest me. And Weiss is a question mark.

Actually whats the harm in trying to overpay on some one year deals?

Unfortunately I believe the only way you get UFAs to sign here now that the rebuild is underway is to massively overpay them. And if history has taught me anything, this is not a winning strategy.

I think the Flames should stay clear of the 3.5M+ UFAs for the next year or 2

Fyp

But as mentioned, I don't want to see anymore Hudlers and Widemans on this team for 4/5 years as we slowly bring up the younger guys.
Taking back a pick for a high caphit player a la Kotalik? Sure. Maybe a couple younger (read 22 to 26) guys looking for a bit of payday. Thats all we should be targeting though.

We're going to have to overpay and/or give out NTCs. I sure hope we stay far, far away from this avenue. A good majority of fans believe the drafting has been improved and we should focus on growing our own talent. I'm inclined to agree. Can't wait for the draft.

You don't sign UFA's. they will only keep you from finishing further down the standings, and won't get you into the playoffs, and keep your youngsters from getting experience, and......

I'd be looking at Derek Roy, Nathan Horton, Stephen Weiss, Mason Raymond, and David Clarkson at high money short term deals. Last thing we need is to be like the oilers and have no veterans in the lineup

Agreed. I think it would be smart to pick up some decent players on one year contracts who can be flipped for picks at the deadline.

wouldn't mind having a few 1 year deals, then renting them out at the deadline. Somebody's got to play on this roster.

You know what excites me the most?

Having a chance to watch Baertschi for 20 minutes a night next year.

Stay away from UFAs.

Clarkson - Absolutely go for it, otherwise, not sure anyone I think would be worth over paying

With everyone getting shipped out, who exactly is going to play on this team? It's not like they have tons of young players waiting in the wings to come up. You don't want to ruin young guys by rushing them to the NHL. There is no way they will not be very active on the free agent market this summer.

I'm not against getting one or two UFAs as long as they are part of a plan of some sort. While I really hope they never go after the Brad Richards types in this position, I'm all for supplementing in that 25-29 year old range. That or getting guys who can act as mentors to the young guys. What's Teemu up to next year? ha

I would love to overpay ryan clowe on a one or two year deal. He gets top ice time and gets to prove he deserves a long term deal and we get to trade him at the deadline. I would go stupid high like a 6 million 1 year deal with no clauses.

Daimian Brunner would be interesting again overpay for 2 years
Mason Raymond
Nathan Horton high risk in terms of injury but he would be a good add again on a 3 years or less term.

Dollars dont matter until 3 - 4 years from so dont worry about going with high dollar value but keep the term short. We need to keep at least 3 spots open for prospects in the top 9
