Default 16 Avenue shut down near McMahon

Just a heads up anyone headed up home that way. Closed due to a fatal accident, shut off between 19 st and 29 st I believe. Major delays.

One person was killed and another critically injured in a crash during the commute home on Tuesday.

The three-vehicle collision happened around 4 p.m. on 16 Avenue N.W. and Crowchild Trail, near McMahon Stadium.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and shut down both directions of 16 Avenue between 19 Street and 29 Street. Parts of Banff Trail and University Drive are also closed.

Was merging from Crowchild onto 16th about 20 minutes ago, was blocked off from the accident so I had to reverse down the ramp and get back onto Crowchild. Looked really bad from what I saw. Smashed up SUV on the median, smashed up pick-up on the right side of the road, looked like an upside down car as well. Multiple fire trucks, police cars and ambulances on scene. Was hoping no one had passed away but doesn't appear that way

If I had to guess I would say someone ignored the yield sign from Crowchild and got hit by someone going straight through. Not great visibility from that yield though.

This pic would support that theory? Then maybe they were hit so hard they hit a vehicle in the left lane too.

thoughts and prayer to the family/friends of the deceased.

That's a bad stretch of road to be closed. There really isn't another main road between Memorial and John Laurie there.

Though it's not the ramp pictured, I specifically avoid the SB Crowchild to EB 16 Ave loop ramp because you can hardly see if someone is tearing up that ramp from University to end you. I know it'll cost $1B to fix, but man the whole University/Crow/16 Ave area is a great example of an intersection built for a Calgary of 250,000 people (though I don't see how the back alley route required to do WB 16 Ave to NB Crowchild was acceptable at ANY point)

I know what you mean; use that loop a fair bit. That's one of the interchanges that needs to be redone ASAP. It's more dangerous than it should be.

Police say a car heading eastbound on 16 Avenue crossed the median and hit a blue truck heading westbound. A red truck, also heading westbound, rear ended the other truck, pushing it into a light standard.

A passenger inside the blue truck was killed, while the driver was critically injured. The driver of the car was also injured.

Wow. Raised median there, you've got to really screw up or have a tire blowout to cross it.

Everywhich way is messed up. Going from NB Crow to EB 16th is just stupid too. Okay, go under this, that's fine, keep going past these apartments, cool, go past this intersection, and just past that, now turn quickly up this odd ramp.

Everything is messed up in that area.

Given that I've seen 3 accidents there, there must be 100's.

And that motel village intersection the light before is totally effed up. I'm surprised there aren't more accidents there.

Not likely that time of day,one has to wonder if the girl in the car that set it off had some sort of medical event to cross over the median.

Oh, so that's what happened.

Came out of North Hill Mall, and was stuck on 19th Street for 30 minutes earlier tonight.

They were talking about the relative speed of the two cars approaching each other as being equivalent to 120.

And my bet is on distracted driving.
