Question Floor Hockey Recreational Leagues in Calgary

Hey all,

Just a question out there for those with experience playing in Floor Hockey Recreational leagues in Calgary.

I've played with the CSSC in their Recreational division for a few years and am looking for a change, anyone try any other leagues out there in Calgary?

Our skill level is that of a Rec-team, not Rec Plus or Intermediate (for those familiar with the CSSC's division levels).

Preferably also something co-ed, basically we enjoy many elements of the CSSC, but just want a change from the CSSC organizationally.

Anyone with any knowledge/experience on this would be great!

Yeah I've actually quit ball hockey myself for the last year, partly due to CSSC incompetence.

Bah! I'd love to join another league too. Good thread sorry I can't help.

GHL seems to do an ok job with both mens and coed ball hockey. They are more rec oriented than superleages (the serious league) and still quite fun.

Of all the leagues I'm familiar with I'd point people there if they are just starting out or looking to move from Cssc (which was intolerable the one time I tried playing there).

The ONLY thing I like about Edmonton is the ball hockey league here, BallHockeyEdmonton.

It's absolutely great! About 14 divisions, varying from beginner all the way to Div 1. April-July has 24 games plus playoffs, and keep very good track of personal stats that are updated on their website. We play in the soccer centers during the summer. Two summers ago I was playing a Div 8 game, and Mark Fistric played on the other team! I think his friends played on the other team. That was fun. He played forward and lit us up bigtime.

Amen brother. And unethical too, tell me is perma-banning someone and ejecting their team from their league arbitrarily for a supposedly negative e-mail that may or may not exist sent their way without proof ridiculous? And then poaching a teammate of their ejected team and offering them and their new team free entry if they can create a team in one week as to not disrupt the original schedule ridiculous? How about not telling the rest of the league of what they have done including allowing a new team replace an old one for free?

/rant
I do not enjoy the CSSC.

I've played co-ed in both the GHL and CSSC.

I think CSSC floor hockey is brutal. I'm not crazy about the rules, especially high sticking. I've found the game venues for the GHL are much better too.

I prefer the freedom of using actual sticks in GHL versus the plastic intramural ones you must use in CSSC. I also really like the consistency of the refs in GHL play.

Now...this might be a girl thing, but I feel much more comfortable with a real stick that's light, versus lugging around a clunky plastic one. This, of course, may only apply to me because I'm a weakling

Ill second the thoughts of CSSC - as a goalie I've seen some pretty blatantly bad infractions not get called. In general, only the biggest complainers get benefit of the doubt. The refs are terrible that they cannot maintain the well intended rules and never have the female players on my teams ever been battered so badly as in the CSSC league.

Try it once to appreciate the other leagues I guess.

I'm going to tag on to this thread, and just put forward that if anyone out there has interest in playing high-end competitive ball hockey (Superleagues) I may have a couple spots open, and you can PM me for more info.

The team is mostly younger, 19-25, although there are some vets. But the league is highly organized and competitive. Matching uniforms, helmets/gloves/shinguards required, detailed live stats, fees similar to ice, wood or composite sticks. Certainly not everyone's cup o' tea.

Recommended would be skilled ice hockey players curious about trying ball, or street hockey gurus who weren't aware a league like this existed.

As for the OP, I would definitely recommend GHL. They run a good league. Lot's of fun, and a good level of competition with decent reffing.

I have no idea how CSSC is still running. That league is terrible.

I'll also vouch for GHL. I used to play in their co ed division. It was fantastic.

CSSC is brutal. I've only played with them a few times but man...

High sticks are stupid. And they call them like Nazi's. Other team had to sit out 4 players because of it, but they truly weren't high sticks. They ended up playing 1 man short the whole game which was pretty stupid.

I had someone slash my stick hard enough for it to break and no call. The guy was just going around doing that. I don't understand how they call things sometimes.

Bump to an old thread.

We're currently in the CSSC as well and looking for a change.

Has anybody played in the IBHL?

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but if someone needs an extra player please let me know via PM. I have played a bunch of hockey but due to a few injuries I am looking to take some time off the ice. Figured this could be a blast.

Cheers
