Okay, I'm going to add my $0.02 here. A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with the same cancer as Armstrong, and went through all the same chemo/treatments that he did. I never really paid attention to the whole wristband thing until recently.
Apparently the "Livestrong" bracelet was only made in yellow, and all the proceeds from their sales go directly to the Lance Armstrong foundation. All the other garbage people are selling (multi coloured ones) are knock offs, with the proceeds going towards companies that make them. I feel like smacking people that wear the "Drinkstrong" and "smokebong" bracelets.
So stick with the yellow authentic ones, and you're actually supporting a cause and not a trend.

Hmmm.
They claim to make donations for the yellow ones and pink ones but they also have wristbands for
Beat Bullying
Breast Cancer Awareness
Breast Cancer Research
Tsunami Relief (in blue/white & pink/black)
Support our troops (in 5 different color schemes)
United We Stand
Beat Racism
Beat Poverty
God Bless America
USA - Strength
USA - Love
USA - Hope
USA - Peace
Rastafarian (inspired by Bob Marley)
Jesus Loves Me
God Bless the World
Viva Mexico!
I Heart NY
Glow in the Dark

Me, I just made my wristband out of an old rubber glove.

I know some places in malls carry them, kiosks. I ordered mine directly from the website a year and a half ago.

I was told the only way you can be sure its a real one is to order it off the website. Apparently, there are fake ones in circulation.... Why would someone make a fake one a try to rip of a charity? I have no idea...

I agree that there are alot of knock offs and we should avoid them, but I'm pretty sure there are more legit ones than just the yellow cancer one.
All the performers at the Live8 show had white ones that say "Make Poverty History". I'm not sure where to get 1 or if they are raising money with them, but they are legit.
I've also seen alot of Nike ones. Not sure if Nike is donating proceeds to charity or not.
oh, And if anyone knows how to get a Live8 one, let me know, that's the one i want.

You can find them right next to the Cabbage Patch Kids and Tickle Me Elmo dolls.

I got a "I (Heart) Surfer Chicks" one in Hawaii for the hell of it. Not sure which charity get's the $0.25 US though
I haven't and don't plan on wearing any of those things though... fad of the year right there. Lance Armstrong's bands are great but i'm sure they need a wirst band for EVERYTHING now.

Who cares if it is a fad? Unlike fotze's cabbage patch kids and tickle-me elmos, this fad raises money for a worthwhile cause. So the more the merrier as far as I am concerned. I guess I will settle for being less cool than Jordon because I wear mine sometimes.
As for the Live8 wristbands, I'm not sure where you can get them, but at Hyde Park at least they came with the admission into the concert. I guess they were kind of like a ticket, but I'm sure there must have been something else since they would be pretty easy to take off and toss over the fence to your buddies.

I really see nothing wrong with it... It's a fad that's all. I just chose not to be part of the fad. So maybe you're cooler than me? Who cares?
Do what you wish.

Fads are fine, I have no problem with people buying the various foundation bracelets if you want to be trendy. You're looking clique, and you're actually supporting something.
My problem is the companies that are profiteering off something that was started by a charity, and turning it into a money making scheme. I'm sure the last thing the Armstrong foundation had in mind when they came up with these things was this crap.
Therein lies my "beef" with the bracelets.

Yes indeed. It's gone from a benefitial cause to some kind of tickle me elmo fad... Anyone remember pogs? or Yu-Gi Oh cards? Pokemon?
Now, i'm not saying those wearing these things are childish but i see more kids with them than grown ups, and those were some fads that stuck out to me.
But really... if you buy one and you support the charity and actually understand the purpose of why you are wearing it. Go right ahead.
It's a fad, but not all fads are bad. Remember Flames car flags? B-)

Well, when your dad is diagnosed with cancer (like mine) and you feel helpless.....you want to do anything you can.....buying a wristband that has it's money going into cancer research and wearing it to support your dad and others like him out there won't seem like such a 'fad'.
Not everyone who buys those things is just trying to be cool.

I wouldn't compare to these things. It's fashion fad, not a toy. Better compared to trucker hats, sweat bands, leather cuff watches, Converse allstars, fake diamond earings on guys, guys with pink shirts, retro anything, mullets.
Oh and by the way. Yu-Gi oh is still a current and quality trend. Hop on board while it's still cool. B-)

Well put, good luck to your dad.
But even if people are just trying to be cool. What's better?
Being cool and raising money for charity, or being cool and just giving money to the latest brand?
I like fashion and I like charity. This is a great way to do both.

Nor did I say it was... I did say if you buy it and wear it to support a cure for Cancer then do whatever you feel helps the cause. My dad AND older Brother have had cancer so i've been down that road...
It will get to a point to where novelty rubber wrist bands will out number the ones Lance Armstrong intended. btw, I said in my very first post in this thread that the Armstrong one's are great so why the hell is everyone in a p*ssy mood?
I swear to god, I will see a "I love rubber wrist bands" glow in the dark novelty wrist band any day now.
So if you want one, buy the official... no knock off
