Default College free agent: Nate Schmidt

Seeing as we missed out on number one college free agent dresker(sp)

Flames management should and have to target number to on the redline list Nate Schmidt, this years version Schultz... But according to scouting reports this kid has a better shot and better play defensively.

If the flames move out a couple defensemen we would have room on the blue line for the kid to play right away... So that would hopefully entice him to come here

The redline report:

2. Nate Schmidt/LD — Univ. of Minnesota. 6-0/194.

Perennial Red Line favorite was twice ranked in our top 100 for the NHL draft. Has a ton of heart and plays every shift as if it were his last. Not the biggest dog in the fight at just 6-0 194 pounds, but hurls his body with reckless abandon and never gives up on the play. Exceptionally physical, punishing open ice hitter who loves to initiate contact. Mean, nasty disposition and to hurt intimidate. Very strong skater with speed and agility. Gets overaggressive and has tendency to force the play offensively. Has been a terrific PP quarterback throughout his career, making sound decisions in puck distribution and taking charge. Love the passion and intensity he brings every shift.

I'm all for signing a college player if they are the best available player, but to be honest I'm getting a little worried that Feaster and co. are getting major tunnel vision with regards to the NCAA.

Feaster can get tunnel vision during the season all he wants because that's when he can sign college free agents, hopefully better for us better scouting better players, last years Free agent signing Brady lamb is progressing really well next year he can be competing for a roster spot

When the season is over he can go back and scout the chl and Europe... During the season the best way to get a young player is through college root IMO

Let's not forget the '89 team was loaded with NCAA guys. I like this shift in philosophy; when a guy finishes college and turns pro he joins the team as a full-grown, educated man.

I hope Feaster & Hartley are out in Minnesota making a good pitch for Schmidt.
