icon57 [News] Baertschi to sit against Ducks

Quote:
Flames head coach Bob Hartley has opted to remove rookie forward Sven Baertschi from the lineup for the contest tonight.

“Sven tonight, he’s a healthy scratch,” the head coach said. “The Ducks are a big team, and I want the biggest possible team in the lineup.”

Steve Begin will draw into the lineup and replace Baertschi.

I really don't have a problem with this move.. Sven did play poorly last game and perhaps watching this one might benefit him more. I like how Hartley has been handling our players so far and I think the added grit that Begin brings against a big ducks team will benefit us.

He should be in Abbotsford IMO. To many veteran's ahead of him right now for him to crack into the top 6.

I expect he'll be in Abby once Backlund is healthy

Hoping he gets back to the Heat for a stint so he'll have as much playing time as possible.

Makes sense vs. the Ducks and LA would be a similar setting.

Hmmm well can't say I'm happy with him sitting but I understand Hartley's motive.

Send him down if you think he cannot handle the size. Kid needs minutes to get better.

Should really be in Abby IMO. A year in the AHL, a summer of hard training and a regular NHL training camp should do him good.

Well for the most part. I mean their obviously has been a few times when I think he has mismanaged this team but generally for the most part I think he's done a good job.. especially when you compare him to some of the things Brent used to do.

yup, might as well send him to the heat and having play 20 mins/game in all situations.

thus far, what a waste of a year for baertchi's hockey development.

Other than everyone hating the ice time comeau gets has there been other instances where people have been upset over hartleys handling of players? All in all he has been doing well so far I believe

Which things did Brent do wrong, that Hartley has done right?

Baertschi - 3 goals in 5 games last year. No goals and 1 assist in 10 games this year.

Horak - 61 games in the NHL last year, this year 6 games so far and mostly kept in the AHL.

Brodie - broke out as top 4 last year; this year started off the season as a healthy scratch (very curious move) but Hartley has since corrected his mistake and he's pretty much where is last year, back on the top 4.

Irving - few good starts last year, this year well... he's now in the AHL. Probably won't be back in Calgary again.

Which other players/instances has made Hartley an improvement over Brent? Not that all of those are his fault, but I don't see the obvious improvement here.

(EDIT : I read again and saw you said just players, not young players. I guess you mean players overall?)

I don't know whether Baertschi should be sent down or not but I know Joe Thornton only played 55 games for Boston in his rookie year. Sitting out some games isn't a terrible choice for rookies.

I don't know anybody that considered Joe Thornton's rookie year a hailing success

Disappointed, but can't say I disagree with the move. He has definitely shown some great flashes, but he had a few weak giveaways last game and looks a bit out of place physically. If he doesn't draw back in soon, send him to the Heat and bring him up to win the Calder next year.

Would like to see him get a chance to play with Backlund again though...

It didn't hurt his career either. Another example is
Spezza who only played 33 games for the Sens during his rookie year.

The thing with Sven is that when the team is injury free there isn't an obvious spot for him. If the Flames want him as a regular, Feaster should have made room for him. By my count we have 7 or 8 natural LWs on our team.

Saying Sven will learn more in Abby vs the press box is not accurate. Having someone beside home explain things while watching from above can do wonders. You can't send Sven back and forth all year. Sit him, give Hume a couple more chances before you make the season decision to send him back.

Yea just in general like how he would do his line combos and such. It is hard to compare them because Brent obviously didn't have a lot of the same talent that Hartley has to work with this year.. Hudler, Wideman, Cervenka.. etc. The Horak one I don't really get.. this team is lacking Centres.. why is he down in the AHL? Irving SUCKS. He doesn't even belong in the AHL if you ask me.. perhaps the ECHL might be a better fit..
