Default Marc Staal eye injury and the Visor Debate

Ouch.

The Good: Did not go to the hospital. Therefore, could see inside the eye at the time.

The Bad: Looks to be a direct hit with likely retina issues

A small investment in a visor could save these guys Millions over their career in lost wages. Why not protect your investment (eyes) better ?

No one said hockey players were smart. I find it surprising that so many scoff at the idea of wearing a visor, especially after wearing them all the time in minor hockey.

This debate was brought up during the CBA discussion and the players did NOT want mandatory use of visors.

I've noticed that the Flames are almost all wearing visors now. A bunch of guys have put them on.

Who's left?

1. Boumeester
2. Begin?
3. McGrattan

I think the league's approach to equipment regulations is bush league.

I'm sure baseball players would like bigger spikes on their cleats, too.

Maybe Aluminium bats?

If I was an insurance company, my premiums would triple for any player not wearing a visor and kevlar socks.

I like what I heard on the Fan this morning..Players say the visor blocks their view..Well how the hell do these guys manage to drive a car with a windshield in front of them.

It has to be agreed to by the PA....they wont.

That's the thing that I don't understand. Every player in the NHL today had to wear at least a visor in every game he played prior to the NHL. You were good enough to get to the NHL with a visor, why would you stop?

In fact, I believe the NHL is the only league/tournament in the world where you can play without a visor (players born before December 31, 1974 can play in IIHF events without a visor, but there aren't many of those guys left).

They have grown up their entire lives with a windshield on every car that they have been in. They are used to the windshield... oh, wait...

Sorry, players, I can't come up with a logical excuse for you.

When you are used to wearing just the helmet, adding in a visor messes with you. It affects your vision, your breathing, your balance, it's actually a lot more intrusive than you would think.

But you also get used to it in a few weeks.

I finally went back to using a full cage about 2 months ago. I get constant #### from other players, but they can all go eat it, because it's not them who will have to deal with it if I take a stick to the eye.

And I'm pretty much adjusted to the visor now. I don't think it significantly affects my play in a negative way at all. If anything, I'm more eager to block shots, and I'll stay in dirty areas longer.

It reduces their peripheral vision. Affects how well you can see the puck when your not looking directly at it, or when it's moving beside you, and also affects how well you can see what players beside you are doing.

For me, the biggest problem is when the puck moves from an area where I see it through to visor, to an area where I see it under the visor.

It's like when you stick a pencil into a fish tank; it's not a straight line anymore. Same with the puck, it looks like it changes direction ever so slightly.

Most of them wore one in Jr..They seem to play just fine when they were in that league.

A full face shield might be a better option then. I know it's not "manly", but it would be wise.

A friend of mine got a stick in the eye playing pick-up hockey - was a fluke accident where someone fell, he was looking elsewhere and their stick came up and clipped him. He has permanent damage to that eye

Everyone should be using eye protection.

They can't...it has to be collectively bargained...just as rule changes etc have to be.

Now what I could see happening is that insurance complanies decide not to provide coverage until it is implemented...then the PA would have no choice but to give in. Until then however, this is NOT a league issue but comes down to what the players decide they wish to do.
