Alright, so here's the deal.
I have to go to Van on March 23rd. I was looking at ticket prices from both Air Canada, and West Jet and was floored by how much a round trip is (Almost $400). As a part time worker, and a full time student, I'm considering doing the drive instead. However, thinking more about it, I'm not sure how much that would be saving me money.
Cheaper to drive if you have a reliable car and time. Leaving here at 7am you can easily be in Vancouver by 4pm their time. Starting in the morning allows you to make the trip without having to grab a hotel and you hit the mountain passes in daylight. Starting with a full tank of gas you will probably gas up two or three times to get there and back (depending on how much you drive when you are there and how efficient your vehicle is). The only wild card is possible winter weather in the passes.
As one who has done the trip between calgary and vacnouver countless times I recommend the flight. Depending on what you drive you may not save much in the way of fuel costs and at the most you are looking at $100 but factor in food during the trip you are not saving much. Unless you desperately need a car while you are here I would fly.
Just fly. You're driving about 1000kms each way which won't be cheap on gas regardless if you have a efficient car. The trip will put 2000kms on your vehicle which depreciates it and puts you closer to your next maintenance.
You're also going in March where weather conditions could still exist enough to slow down your drive or possibly even cancel it if conditions are bad enough. You're also likely buying extra meals if you're on the road all day instead of just flying in at night to arrive at the same time.
For $400 return, it's totally not worth the hassle, unless you needed your car to drive around Vancouver for a week or something.
Probably cost you about 300 bucks in gas and a total of what 20 hours driving time depending on speed.
Is a hundred bucks worth the time?
This is true. Sometimes it is worth paying a little for peace of mind and time. If you have someone that can pick you up and drive around then flying is the way to go.
Although I do remember being a student and $100 is a lot of beer money.

This.
$300 in gas.
A day's worth of meals each way.
Wear and tear on your vehicle.
12-14 hours of lost time, and a full day of travel on each end.
A dangerous drive through the mountains.
Not worth it unless you can car pool with others. When you get 2-3 people all avoiding the $400 plane ticket, it starts to become worth it.

You can hop on the train at YVR and be downtown in 20 mins. $400 is actually a decent rate. Last month they were floating around $600. Book the flight.

I PROMISED MESS I WOULDN'T DO THIS
You can hop on a Greyhound bus for $122 round trip (advance purchase). Not saying it's the best option (you're looking at around 15 hours each way), but it's probably the cheapest option short of trying to hitch a ride with a stranger on kijiji
have you looked at flying into Abbottsford? I've had some great luck getting cheap flights there, and it's a nice easy airport experience. No crowds to speak of.

Anyone have any advice?
You picked the wrong time to go as that is the beginning of CBE's spring break.
Greyhound is $122 return if booked online in advance. Take the one that leaves at 6pm and arrived in the am... Ya its a 16 hour bus ride, but if you take a few gravol with you, its pretty easy to sleep for 12 hours of it. Only wasting the wee hours of the night that way... Thats what I do.

I've done overnight busses in India, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam; and the overnight Greyhound from Calgary to Vancouver was easily the worst experience of all of these...never again!
