Default Choosing a favorite team: NFL

How did you choose your teams outside of your home town? For example, I got Calgary in the 80īs, since Håkan Loob used to play in my home town in Sweden. I tagged along... :P

Bought this fancy tv-package, and got a lot of sport channels. Thought I should start following the NFL next season, but it would be more fun if I chosed a team to follow. Since NFL isīnt that big in Sweden, perhaps you could help me? Any insight would be grateful.

The teams I support I started follow when I was just a kid (Iīm 33), so I have tried to combine what I, as a kid, would have chosen, as well as the 33 year old me.

I have set up a few deal breakers:
Donīt want one of the most popular teams.
Donīt want one of the "best" teams (hey, I have followed Flames on over 25 years, so Iīm used to THAT).
Ownership: Want "the good guys".
Crest and colour.

Some teams go away at the start with this: NY Giants, Dallas, Tampa (the puck was in!).

I'd just pick my favorite city after ruling out particularly unlikeable and/or successful teams (I'd add the Ravens, Patriots and 49ers to your list, and people in San Diego don't care about football, so I wouldn't root for the Chargers either). I'd have a hard time picking any team other than the Saints just because New Orleans is such an amazing city and it's got the whole Katrina comeback story, but I don't know if you have a particular affinity for any other NFL city.

Unfortunately, I was born into being an Eagles fan. I don't recommend it.

Edit: Being from Sweden, I guess the Vikings would be somewhat of a natural fit, and they've got a passionate fan base and a decent team.

My sisters live in Houston, so that's a good enough reason to cheer for the Texans...I don't really follow NFL though.

I have to agree with the above in Minnesota. Some real exciting talent there as well.
I became a Seahawks fan the moment they gave T.O. A tryout and stuck with them even after he was cut. There jerseys are top notch, stadium is one of the loudest, somewhat known as Canada "wests" team, have a exciting coach, play incredibly aggressive and feature Browner (ex Calgary Stampeder).

I went to a Cardinals game in Arizona a few years back, so I officially adpoted them.

Clearly I am a glutton for punishment.

I agree with this. It's an exclusive club and we don't want just any bandwagon fan jumping in our bus.

I lived in New Jersey for the 5th and 6th grades. Prime team picking years. Since then I've been a NY Giants fan.

I bet on football quite a bit, so i cheer for the team i bet on mainly, so my interest in the NFL is almost entirely peripheral, but i have however found myself to have a real soft spot for the atlanta falcons.

Growning up my dad was a San Fran fan and my best bud was Dallas. I didn't like either team, but Elway was doing his thing and I adopted the Broncos. Been my team ever since

Plus they had one of the classiest and best receivers to ever play the game in Steve Largent and one of the best ever (and amazingly underrated) to ever play safety Kenny Easley. And Seattle has a really cool vibe. Kind of like Vancouver but without the pretentiousness and the riots.

John Elway was one of the first guys to pull a Tom Erixon. I've always hated him and the Broncos for that, and I hate Eli Manning for the same reason.

I'm a Seahawks fan because I grew up watching them. They have a great fan base and the loudest stadium in the league.

Can't stand The Steelers, NY Teams, Patriots, Dolphins, Cowboys, and Colts.

I grew up in northern BC, everyone was Canucks or Oilers fans but my dad was a Flames fan so I was too. Same with the Raiders. Now I'm close to Seattle so they're my second favourite but definitely Raiders first.
