Default Wedding Invitations (Holy Crow They're Expensive)

Why on Earth are wedding invitations in the vicinity of $350 for 200?

Is there somewhere that Calgary Puckers have used that they got simple invitations for relatively cheap?

Ideas for getting around paying the inflated price for invitations?

My wife and I made our own. We bought a kit from Michael's and printed our own.

Worked out quite well. I think in the end we spent less than $50. But then had to add the cost of postage. Was still very cheap. Invitations looked nice.

Edit: I'll see if I can dig one up and post a pic.

hahaha, it's funny to see the industries that can get away with inflating their prices.

Not sure if your graphically inclined, but I did mine up with http://www.print100.com as double sided postcards. If I recall correctly it was about $100 for 300?

Here's a tip, as soon as you add the word "wedding" the price goes up by a minimum of 25%. You're not looking for "wedding invitations", you're looking for "greeting cards".

10 years ago, we designed our own, thanks to a blatant rip off from a friend's idea, who saw it and another wedding, and, CP's own Reggie Dunlop providing the graphic art. Used MS Word, or Powerpoint to design as it was pretty simple.

Went to West Canadian Color (local printer) to get the printed on heavier paper stock.

They were designed as hockey tickets, with the wife being a former, and long since converted, casual Canuck fan.

Also did our own wedding program, again just on Word...easy enough to do something nice and elegant, and print it on some special paper.

we made ours and then got them printed and cut at the University of Lethbridge. Many Uni's have printing services on campus and they were $80 dollars for a 5 card colour invitation for about 120 people. Best part was they even cut them for us as well, can't find a better deal anywhere.

IMO, you should spend the absolute most money you can on things like invitations, because the guests will be able to tell how expensive they are, and will thus have a better time at the wedding.

+1 for Vista print. There's a chance your invitation will look like somebody else's, but if budget is more important than originality, it looks like you can get away with about $1/card.

My wife used Shutterfly for our thank you cards, they send them in the mail after you make them online, had we known how nice they'd be we would have done the invitations through them as well. As an aside, apparently after you've paid for food and booze for everyone you're supposed to send thank you cards.

We printed ours at Staples I think.

My wedding was ultra economy though, IIRC, we spend slightly over $2k for the whole thing, including clothes, food and venue.

Making them on your own isn't the worst idea, but words of wisdom from Mr.Coffee:

if you're sitting on the couch, and your fiance is struggling through the 100-200 invitations and getting frustrated, not a bad idea to lend a hand.............. less hassle in the long run.

We ordered ours online from some place in Manitoba but this was 23 years ago, so I have no idea if they're still in business. Cost us $350 for the invites (at least a couple hundred, can't remember how many we ordered but it was a whack), and some decorations. I'll google and see if I can find out whether they're still in business, but between Michael's and DIY stuff you can find online, it's probably cheaper to do it that way.

George went cheap on the invitations and his fiancée got poisoned from licking the envelopes, on Seinfeld.

If you are one of the lucky 60% after the wedding, the divorce will be more expensive. Consider the wedding invitations relatively inexpensive if you make it!

Best of Luck!

also remember that nobody cares about a wedding invitation and that it eventually ends up in recycling or the garbage.
