Does this seem weird?
Howdy,
I've been lurking here for a couple years and finally have a question I need to ask.
I just started a new job, after leaving another very abusive position. I have no desire to repeat my experience so I may be over analyzing things and I found the first day to be dreadfully boring. To preface I do have a post secondary education from SAIT in a technical field and graduated back in 2008.
I am finding it very weird that the company I have joined has been in operation for five years, yet the most senior technician (who is not the son of the VP) has only just been there for a year and they have just hired 3 new techs in the last 3 months. Something just doesn't seem right about this to me and I can't get those in the know to talk about it, which leaves me thinking I am walking into another bad situation. What do you guys think?

First- no job is going to be 'the greatest' situation. Most jobs either work for you or don't. That being said, sound like there is a lot of turnover in the new job, meaning that either the employees don't match up to the management's standards, or the employees feel they'd be happy someplace else. I'd keep my options open.

One of my foster kids ended up working at a pump and dump operation a few years ago, my advice to him was keep your head up, don't do anything that could come back on you and make sure you get paid for everything on time.
Other than find another job can't think of anything else

I've had 5 jobs in the last 4 years, as I have been contracting in IT. I have seen a lot, from the boring and low key, to the high charged political warfare you could write a book about.
My advice is you are probably shell shocked from your last gig. If I can guess it was a super aggressive and politically charged atmosphere. That takes a while to adjust, and you can have the abused wife feeling after leaving, ie: "was it really that bad?"
Give this new place a fair shake, like 6 months. By then you should know more truth, right now you are trying to sort yourself out so you maybe reading negative into some minor things.
If in 6 months you hate it, go somewhere else. You sound like an educated guy, and there is tons of opertunity for you out there. Then again, you may end up liking it in the end.

Was one of the first things they told you during your orientation "Never go in the basement. No matter what sounds you think you hear, DO NOT go in the basement!" If so, you may be working for cannibals.

I wish I'd gotten this advice years ago...
Ignore the noises. Never, never go into the basement. I'll never get that ear back....

perhaps the company is one of those places that is a training ground within your industry and people leave there for other places.

Is it possible your new company may be in expansion mode and have made the new hires for that reason?
