During a question-and-answer session hosted by the Council for Foreign Relations, Harper was asked by a member of Human Rights Watch about the prospects of a federal inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.
"I remain very skeptical of commissions of inquiry generally. My experience has been they almost always run way over time, way over budget, and often the recommendations prove to be of limited utility," he replied.
Harper said the issue has been studied extensively, and that "it is time to pass to action."
The Conservative government, Harper said, has invested resources to establish prevention programs and to buttress the investigative powers of police, and has also worked to improve the status of aboriginal women living on reserves, including legislation to protect their property right

Actually trying to do something sounds like a better idea to me.

After watching the excellent MSNBC sex slaves series over the last few weeks, news like this is great to see.
There's the old debate that prostitution is a victimless crime, but after watching the horror show that some of these girls go through, and the way the survivors of prostitution talk about it it can't be seen as a victimless crime as long as you have predatory John's looking for young girls and boys, and pimps there to exploit it.
There was one done in San Antonio Texas where Cantina's paid to have young girls kidnapped in Mexico, and young American girls lured by the promise of nice clothes. They were then locked in these Cantina's 24 hours a day and basically treated like a piece of meat.
There's an argument for legalization and safe work environments for these girls, and I'm ok with that if there are solid options to get them out of what is a soul killing business.
But there will always be a market for underground brothels and other worse stuff.
I don't know, it just seems like paying a girl for sex who probably hates you, is probably a pretty empty experience.

This is great to see! I hope that those ladies can have some semblance of a normal life after that experience.

As mentioned in the article, many of these kids come from broken homes. Sad as it is, I could see many falling back into the cycle. It could be the only way they know how to survive

Considering how traumating this experience could have been for them, you would hope they would get a lot of social support so then they have a chance to live life the proper way.

Hopefully there's a support system in place. Most of these girls have been probably heavily drugged, and beaten and systematically broken down.
There's even a book on Amazon and Barnes and Noble called Pimpology the 48 laws of the game. Written by a former Pimp, thinly disguised as a book about building business relationships, But is a blueprint on how to find the girls, seduce the girls and break them down.
Most of these girls have no self worth, they have become shadows and objects to be used and traded and beaten.
It probably takes years of intense therapy to get them away from hearing the streets.

Your right, with a lot of these "Johns" its not as much about companionship as much as its about power. Similar to rape. Paying them for it probably makes them feel better about the act because they don't think about or care about where the money goes.
Its sex without love, or even like, there's no commitment to the girl, she's just an object.
I felt bad for the cops doing the stings in some of these shows where they talk about these guys picking up girls with baby seats in their car on the way to pick up their kids, and they just don't see it. There's a possibility that someday one of their daughters is going to be getting into the same kinds of cars with the same kinds of people.
I get it, sometimes as guys we go to the bar, get lucky and pick up a girl for a one nighter, but at least there's a connection there. There's the possibility of mutual satisfaction even if there's no long term thing. But at least you're not buying a human being and coming as close to rape as you can get for a few dollars.
I to an extent think that legalization could help if you can get rid of the pimps, make sure the girls get decent health care and access to counseling, and security against the predator Johns. But we are always going to have underground brothels for guys who want young girls or boys or want more then just sex with no consequences. We're always going to have sicko's going on the sex tours in asia so they can go after early teen kids.
Its called the worlds oldest profession, we as a society are never going to stop it, but at least we can try to prevent it from being as one poor girl called it "a career in hell"
