Default Buying a car originated from Ontario or Quebec.

We are looking for a newer SUV (2010-2011) and have found one or two that are a great deal only to find out they are from out East. I'm starting to wonder is this still as big of a factor as it once was.

If I'm buying a vechical from a dealership that it pre-owned certified like an Acura, BMW or Mercedes where it come with a 10year corrosion warranty should people still steer shy of these? Because there are up to 15% savings to be had on some of these vehicles and I just want to know if its fact or fiction.

Read the fine print and make sure the corrosion warranty can be transferred and the work can be done by your local dealership.

The corrosion warranty usually covers the body of the vehicle and neglects the frame where the real damage takes place. For me to justify the potential headaches I would be hoping for closer to 40% cheaper. Anything less I wouldn't bother.

The three dealerships I mentioned all inspect and recertifiy their own cars in house and end up giving you a warranty that is pretty much as good as new. And it is fully transferable to any of their dealerships, it's a company wide standard not specific to one dealership.

So two or three winters already I'd want to see pictures of the underside of this unit, or have brought here on a no obligation basis.

But would a car that has had 2-3 winters on the roads out east be in that bad of shape? I had one of the Ontatrio ML350's lifted side by side with a Calgary sold model and to the naked eye they looked identical.

The cars are already on the lot here in Calgary so they do not need to be transferred or sent here.

This is what I fear from any car from Quebec...

When I was searching around for used Mazda 3s I would search nation-wide out of interest. Ontario and Quebec did seem cheaper much of the time, and I was curious if this was due to generally higher mileage or corrosion issues.

If it was me saving 15% wouldn't be worth it due to the costs of getting the car home. Also, if you're buying from an Ontario lot do you pay the HST?

Tought to say without first looking at them. If the vehicles are here I would defiantely ask to have it put up on a hoist and check it out myself.

In my experiance 2-3 years is enough so that all of the bolts, and fastners are rusted up and makes it a nightmare to repair. The real issue however is the structural integrity of the frame/unibody. Most vehicles with a frame ie trucks, etc are less of a worry , but surface spotting on a unibody can turn into a nightmare further down the road (pun intended).

Okay so there are two cars we are looking at and both are already in Calgary. Due to this "Eastern Stigma" they are both easily $4000-$6000 less than others we have found.

I know I'm worried about things like the pictures as well, however I have seen and driven them both and they are great. It's the long term problems I'm wondering if anyone has had any experiences with any newer cars or if they have heard if the corrosion issue is still something to worry about or if it is a thing of the past.

We got a 2003 Acura Mdx that was from out east, the family who had it moved here with it, about 2006. Was well taken care of, had all the history and checked out drove well, small issues over the first year...at about the year and a half mark (so the vehicle was about 4.5 years old), the radiator corroded itself out rather spectacularly. Took a pretty good chunk of the savings we made out of it, nevermind the other issues that popped up.

My mom works for an insurance company, and she has warned us to be very careful about vehicles (especially trucks and SUVs) being sold out east. There is a very high prevelance of Stolen Vehicles being re-badged with legit S/Ns out east, and often the sales are being targetted towards Alberta and Saskatchewan
