City to close McCall Lake Golf Course
Breaking on twitter from a number of sources, is that the city will close McCall Lake after 2014. No links yet, but that's the plan.
How long until the others are gone as well?

At first this news shook me, but then I remembered what a gopher-hole infested, insect-ridden, golf-ball-stealing, airplane-noise-having, 'hole McCall Lake is. But it is the place I played my very first round! It will always be dear to me for that.
What is supposed to come of it? Put it up for sale?

That was one of the least expensive courses to play in the city. And after I could go for pizza at Coco Brooks.
While I hate to admit it. Golf is simply not a recreational activity that the City's recreation department should be funnelling city funds into.
I can only imaging more light or medium industrial.

I always wondered how Calgary could have so many golf courses when you can only play 6 months a year. I guess I got my answer, they can't. If they aren't closing down they are losing money year after year.

I forgot to mention in the first post that they are also "re-structuring" the green fees for the other courses. So I would expect that courses like Mapleridge are about to see some increases.

Played a lot of rounds of golf there when I was growing up, including my first ever.

They would be able to build them higher than 2 stores considering how low the planes fly over there...

I don't mind if they close it. A few years back I finally drove the green on the 9th hole by hitting straight across the water.
I'm done with McCall Lake.

same, did a bunch of lessons there on saturday mornings when I was a kid. I remember you could show up and hit as many balls as you like and a pro would come give some tips to a bunch of kids.
That little par 3, was a huge deal the first time I cleared hole 6 over the water.

This is a damn shame. Sure the course wasn't in the greatest condition all the time but it had some memorable holes (who hasn't gone for the green on #9?).
Plus us aviation geeks had the perfect course to play, golf and airplanes roaring overhead. Heaven.

Silverwing across the street is a much better course for only a few dollars more- although the new runway may change the appeal that course does have. Im guessing this means maple ridge is going to be even busier in the coming years.

Increases? I seriously hope restructuring means decreases. Mapleridge is already way too expensive for what it is.

That map in the paper seems misleading. It looks like some of the golf course will be converted to a "recreational campus", but if you look at the area right now there is already a bunch of baseball fields there and where approx 7 of ball diamonds currently sit will be changing to industrial.
http://goo.gl/maps/CjE4g
And those fields are really busy with tournaments in the summer, so those will all probably need to be relocated.
Edit: Perhaps some photoshop guru could overlay the proposed map on the google map to show what is happening where.
