Default Tokyo to host 2020 Summer Olympics

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2013/...-istanbul.html

This afternoon in Buenos Aires, the IOC chose the host city for the 2020 Olympics. The three finalist cities were Madrid, Istanbul, and Tokyo. Madrid and Istanbul tied on the first ballot and Madrid was eliminated on a tie-breaker vote.

The first round votes were: Tokyo - 42; Istanbul & Madrid - 26 (Istanbul won the run-off 49-45)

The second round votes were: Tokyo - 60; Istanbul - 36

This was Madrid's third-straight failed bid, losing to London and Rio previously. This was Istanbul's fifth failed bid since the year 2000 (they didn't submit a bid for 2016). Tokyo previously hosted the Games in 1964 and previously lost its bid for the 2016 games.

Isn't Spain one of those almost broke countries? Did they not learn anything from hangover in Greece?

I am eagerly anticipating the opening ceremonies. I predict tentacles, and lots of them.

Let's all stop with the radiation jokes. Calgary has more background radiation going on than Tokyo. As long as they don't run the marathon a couple of hundred miles up north through the puddles on the reactor grounds the radiation fear is (as always) misunderstood and exaggerated.

Interesting thing for me personally - I was in my last year of high school for the Calgary Olympics (had a blast) and my daughter will be in her last year of high school here when Tokyo comes around.

Really keen to see the development that takes place in the city of over the next few years. With people really behind the Olympics getting the bid has immediately knocked out a lot of the pessimism that's been present over the past few years. That, and I think the games will go over well - it's a smart plan in that they're simply going to be utilization current infrastructure (trains and transport) in a compact area of the city.

Tokyo is a great choice. I will definitely consider attending the Olympics there. My favourite city in the world.

I've always wanted to go to Japan, maybe this will be a good reason to go.

Makes me sad that I'll be thirty... Guess it's time to start looking at potential trips to these big events as less of a party trip and more of a lame adult trip with sight seeing and crap... Lame.

All of my best party trips have been after the age of 30.

I'm 30 and my best partying has been between 28 and now. I will be 37 when Tokyo hosts the Olympics and I'll make it a party come hell or high water
