Question Funny misconceptions you had of the game when you were young

Post some funny or wildly wrong misconceptions of the game you had as you grew up and were learning the game. My favourite 2:

1- I used to think the ice surface was at least 5 feet deep
2- I used to think that goaltenders were pulled to provide extra motivation, and didn't realize you had an extra skater for it until I was at least 7 or 8.

I shared the ice depth one.

I also thought that only white guys were allowed to play.

When I was 3 and 4 a good family friend Mel Bridgman played for the Flames. For some reason I thought that anyone with a moustache played in the NHL until I was 6. Used to always point out to my mom when I saw a NHL player, which was often in the early 80's given the popularity of moustaches at the time.

I used to think the referees were criminals.

I used to think NHL players had no endurance since they only stayed on the ice for 30 seconds.

I can't skate ...
My 5 year old son seems to think it's better to skate as fast as possible - away from the puck rather than get into the pack scrums & pretends he's fast like Sonic the Hedgehog.

Or if there is music playing during Timbits that he's there to entertain the parents in the stands - he'll start dancing Gangnum Style!

Anyways though myself too when I was little thought the ice was like 5 ft thick & refs were somehow allowed out from jail for whatever reason.
I definitely remember Lanny joining the team due to his mustache. At just past 10+ yrs old I couldn't care less that he scored 66 goals.

I was so surprised when I went to my first NHL game that there was no live play by play to listen to.

I thought the play by play announcing would be heard at the game as well.
My first NHL game, I asked my dad why I couldn't hear The HNIC guys.

Edit: not uncommon I guess.

I remember why I wanted to be a goalie. I remember standing at the bench waiting for the next shift barely able to see over the boards. I was not as quick as the other kids so lots of times just as I was skating one way the play would go the other. However as I stared out I spotted our goalie and I'm thinking look at this guys shift he's out there the whole game, and hardly skates at all. It was like I just cracked the safe. Next game I had the pads on and I never looked back.

Not my misconception, but my brother used to think the puck had miniature skate blades on it so it can glide on the ice.

oh my most embarrasing one when I was a kid... when HNIC did intermission interviews or hot stove type interviews they always had city backdrops. When I was very young, like 5 or 4, I used to think they had giant ladders for the people to do interviews on so they could be seen above the city. Complete with huge tv screen for them to look at Ron Maclean with a tv camera and all.

I used to think cities like Montreal, Quebec, Toronto were so far away I'd never see them.

I don't remember any of my own, but when I was young I remember my dad saying goals were worth 2 points and assists were worth 1 (dad was not much of a sports fan). I also remember having to convince him this was not the truth.

Not a misconception and I was not too young, but everytime they said Andrew Ference I thought the call was Interference.

Frozen puck meant...well...they had to stop play to chip the puck out of the ice.

I used to think that captains of the team could not get penalties.

I thought that Michel Goulet's name was Michelle Koolaid.

When I was young,4 or 5 years old, I thought the goalies were the weakest players on the ice because they kept falling down when the puck hit them.

I thought that there were 7 Canadian teams after the Jets and Nordiques moved.
They were the Leafs, Habs, Sens, Flames, Oilers, Canucks and Thunder Bay Lightning.
