Jason Kenney wants to take away Cdn citizenship from terrorists
Frankly, I'm of the opinion that if you are a citizen of another country and you apply to become a Canadian citizen, you should have to renounce your citizenship of your former country.
http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/02...-in-terrorism/
Quote:
With Canadians being blamed for recent terrorist attacks in Bulgaria and Algeria, Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has suggested new legislation may be needed to revoke the citizenship of dual nationals who commit terrorism.
Mr. Kenney told reporters Wednesday he wanted to discuss the issue with Conservative MP Devinder Shory, who has tabled a private member’s bill proposing that Canadians who commit acts of war against Canada should lose their citizenship.
The minister said he wanted to look into broadening the scope of Mr. Shory’s bill to include Canadians who commit acts of terrorism. The bill, C-435, applies only to Canadians who are also citizens of a second country.
“You know, Canadian citizenship is predicated on loyalty to this country and I cannot think of a more obvious act of renouncing one’s sense of loyalty than going and committing acts of terror. And so I think that’s an idea that I look forward to discussing with Mr. Shory,” he said.

Yes, you are either an Icelandic living in canada or a canadian living in canada. Keep your heritage we are talking citizenship here.

This is a slippery slope. False accusations could lead to you being abandoned by your country.

No more dual citizens? I agree that the known terrorists should have their citizenship revoked and can't see a downside to that. I don't understand the dislike of dual citizens though.

There's nothing wrong with dual citizenship
However, if you are a convicted terrorist, I have no issue with stripping them of Canadian passport

Nothing wrong with dual citizenship at all. But this terror rule seems like a no brainer to me.

I just cant fathom why an honest law abiding family should revoke their citizenship to live in Canada, that is simply xenophobic and stupid.
Of my 5 siblings, 4 of us have moved back and forth between both nations over the last 30 years. All of us, hard working, educated people who love both countries.
I wish more people have even a clue how hard it is to go through the immigration system legitimately, it took 5 years of applications and showing we had money in order to emigrate into Canada. I know people love to harp on immigration because they are afraid of darkies and arabs, but its often from a place of fear and ignorance.

If we had a popular opinions thread, Jason Kenney could post that.

Yup, I think if you leave Alberta, you should never be able to return.
If you like it so much in Saskatchewan, why don't you just marry it?

And what does it harm you or anyone living in Canada that I hold dual citizenship?

the opportunity to live, work, be educated, vote, access to both social systems, ease of travel, sense of culture and belonging
I'm Canadian, my wife is American, our son is dual. I'm very happy that he will have opportunities that both countries offer

Once someone becomes a full citizen, it's not really possible to take it away. All Canadian citizens are suppossed to be treated equally before the law, and once you join the club you're in.
I'd much rather see a situation where dual citzens are stripped of citizenship than have the government arbitrarily decide something is terrorism and then take away citizenship. The potential for abuse is just too big here.

The only thing I'm going to use my dual citizenship is for when I retire and wish to summer in warmer climes in the winter. Otherwise, I have no interest in living in the United States.

As a dual citizen I am extremely gratefull to have the ability to go home and look after my mum in the UK if I need to.
That said I see no reason why Canada should allow people to establish citizenship and then leave using Canadian citizenship as insurance in case something goes wrong in what ever thirld world crap hole they are from.
If you are a naturalised canadian citizen there should be an obligation to live in Canada more than elsewhere, If I choose to move back to the UK for a decade my citizenship ought to be revocked, they could add in an easy reapplication clause or something like that fot the rare few that have to move away for a while and then wish to return.

I'm sick and tired of these guys going and getting in trouble in other countries and than pulling out their Canadian citizenship as soon as the #### hits the fan. Good on Kenney.
