Not sure how he played with Florida? but at one time he looked like he would be a big, hitting d-man that could also play offensivley.

10th overall pick in 2007. 3rd defenceman taken. That 2007 Draft class was one of the worst ever.

D Sutter adding more size with skill again. Good pick up youth, size, and skill on the D.
Feaster should have looked into this.

I think we're deep enough (aka crowded) defensively to justify a trade like this.
There will be plenty of opportunities to pick up similar level/style/sized defensemen later on in the year. Right now the pairings seem to be working fine and Sarich can rotate in for size or to give Smith/Butler a breather.

Agree with your points i was thinking more for the future. Next season there will be some spots open up. After all he is only 25.

24 years old; hasn't shown much over the last few years in the NHL. Id say best case is he becomes a steady phsyical #5/6D. Never came close to reahcing his draft position. A guy like Breen fills his spot for the Flames.

If the Isles didn't claim Hickey the Kings don't do this trade IMO.

Did Dean Lombardi get fired or something? Why is everyone saying that Sutter made this acquisition?

To be fair a head coach has a lot of influence in who is picked up too. The GM calls the shots, but the coach will go to he GM with his needs and grievences.

It's kinda funny that when almost every player that goes on waivers is claimed or whenever there is a trade for a a borderline NHL'er someone here always says "we should have taken him" or "we should have made that trade" yet when some people said we should have traded for Jeff Carter or Kyle Turris those players weren't good enough or didn't have enough of a "2-way game"
I'm glad we didnt' pick up another border line NHL'er. We have enough of them

Ellerby has a lot of tools, but one of those guys who can't get the sum of his skillset to add up to the overall package he should be. But he's a young defenceman, and sometimes a new surrounding is what can make a guy turn the corner.
I would guess that Sutter and Lombardi do have similar views on the type of player they like, but Lombardi being the GM and Sutter the coach, Lombardi has more patience and will hold up longer than Darryl ever could as a GM waiting for his young players to develop. Still do the Kings win the cup if Lombardi doesn't get a bit aggressive and trade for the likes of Richards and Carter, plus add Penner the season before?

Lisa Dallman:
Dean Lombardi: "Right now we have to operate on the premise Willie and Greener are done for the year."
Note the word 'premise'..Asked him about Mitchell. DL: "Nothing has changed either way."
DL "If he comes back it's a tremendous bonus. If not, we can't continue to rely on that. We've got to get in that mindset."
More DL: "So that when he (Mitchell) comes back it's almost like a total bonus vs. sitting and waiting and hoping. It does us no good."
