The Drum & Monkey and Bamboo Lounge to close
The Drum & Monkey and Bamboo Lounge are closing. Sunday is their last night.

I used to have many long nights while drinking quads down there.

Any time we've been in there lately it's pretty dead. The beer quality has a been pretty terrible as well.
The location should be decent for a good pub to take its place.

Yeah, I've got some great memories of that place but I just sort of outgrew it.

Agreed. We used to go there often between work and Flames games, and then a bunch of us started getting sick the day after. We just all stopped going.

The best and worst part was that pizza window next door!

I used to watch Rangers games early morning at the Drum...and I have seen that place packed at 5 am for important matches.
They used to do a great early morning breakfast too.

Seems like a pub needs to have good food to really be successful these days.
The drum's food has been pretty horrible the last few years from what I've seen/experienced.

There is that Irish pub on the other end of the block. I have been a few times and it is decent but it always seems pretty dead when I am there.

Pubs need to be resturants essentially. All the drinking business goes to the Beerhall places like National, Wurst, Craft...etc. Basically places that offer more of a lively atmosphere.

My favourite Drum and Monkey memory was shortly after my little brother turned 18 we were there for lunch one day.
He ordered the mushroom burger. Took one bite and realized there was no burger patty; it was a portabello mushroom burger.
He was not amused. I snickered and asked the waitress for a real burger for him.

DAMMIT! I love the Drum and Monkey. I was even planning on having a Drum night next Saturday.
That being said, it's not totally surprising. They were never busy unless it was after midnight on a Friday / Saturday or before a Flames game. Found this explanation on Reddit from the bar manager:
Quote:
I was there last night, and spoke with the manager. The building has a new owner who decided to to fix it up/bring it up to code. After investigation they found there's so much to do its going to take like s year or more to complete. The building is not being torn down but requires I large amount of restoration and renovation.
It's possible when the dust settles and the work is fine that the Drum "might" reopen. The building will stay put though.

No real secret that that building was one wild beer fart away from collapsing in on itself. That place should have been condemned.

I wonder how much raising the minimum drink prices have really killed the bar scenes in Alberta and BC, especially the ones that cater to younger people and university students. When I was organizing an event out here a few months back, the manager told me that business has been steadily declining for a few years and that it was a citywide thing. There have also been a few bars I know of that have shutdown or changed owners over the fast five years or so.
I've also noticed that most people I hangout with are either having/finding more house parties to go to or drinking most of their booze at home and then just buying one or two at the bar, or sneaking in a flask.
