Jihad- Kid's Assignment- What is your personal favourite Christmas/Holiday Tradition
Hi CP,
I am asking you all to do another survey/favour for me if you would. My kid is in 'foods' class and for their final project for this semester, they are supposed to do random surveys of what people's favourite personal holiday traditions are. The idea is to include random people/random celebrations/random religious traditions/random holiday things you most look forward to. This Friday, they have to put a list together and talk about what their 5-6 favourite responses are and where the people who respond are from. Any tradition would be great, and if it involves a favourite food, even better.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
My favourite tradition is going back home to Chatham and having delicious plates of cheeses, fruits, my dad's venison jerky and my mom's homemade cookies and treats- with homemade wine.
Thanks again. Any and all responses are greatly appreciated.

The thing I most look forward to for Christmas is going to my grandparents on Christmas Eve for Christmas dinner. We go to a Christmas Eve church service, then go back to their place and eat Rouladen (German meat dish) and mashed potatoes and the works. We exchange gifts Christmas Eve as well.

What I look forward to is going to my aunts place on Christmas eve. It has become a tradition within the family where all my relatives, cousins and thier kids get together for a feast of prime rib and all the fixins. After dinner we all gather together and play games followed by the handing out gifts to one another. The highlight for me is seeing the glow in the eyes of all the children as they open thier gifts. Christmas to me has always been about family.

I've been gone for too long to really think much about Christmas anymore, but the things that I miss the most about being with family in Canada for Christmas are decorating the tree with my brother and family dinner together on Christmas evening. Those are what mean the most to me.
For new years day it was always dinner at my grandparents' with steak pie and haggis. Nothing religious at all in our celebrations. Just about being with family.
Here in China, Spring Festival is the big holiday. There are some traditions around it that I love: the ridiculous amounts of fireworks that go on for days, sending lanterns into the sky or watching lanterns in the sky, making dumplings, the day-after-day feasting etc. Still though, it's the warmth of family time being prioritized over everything else that makes it the holidays.

My parents house has a wood burning fireplace. After my sister and her family show up on Christmas Eve and everyone goes to bed, my dad and I stay up and have a few drinks in front of the fire.
Half the time we don't even talk. Just sit in the living room with all the decorations and the fire and enjoy the silence.

I desperatly miss the english tradition of opening up the pubs late on Christmas eve and then again for lunch on Christmas day so you can maintain a decent buz throughout while dealing with family.

Since I was about 16 and could drive, I make it a point every Christmas morning to make bacon. I try not to eat a lot of bacon throughout the year (this year I've fallen off the wagon mind you), but a day or two before Christmas I go and buy a pack of the high quality bacon, and make it Christmas morning. If there is a handful of family around, I will make two packs.
Every Christmas morning for about 20 years now, only exception was when I was on a boat and did not have access to a kitchen, but the cook made bacon Christmas morning anyways.

Stockings are my favorite. And they always have a juice box, mandarin orange and some candies in it.

We get to open 1 Christmas Eve present.
That and full contact street/odr hockey are the best Christmas traditions.

Hanging out in PJs watching the nieces and nephew have a great time opening presents, while sipping on moderately priced champagne. For me, it's everyone finally relaxing and having a good time.

one of my favorite things about christmas over the past number of years is the calmness once it's here. my work is absolutely ######ed going up to christmas and to be able to sit back and relax and not worry about anything to do with work is sooooo nice!!
an awesome food tradition i have is i make rum balls every year. i sorta want to borrow a 'breathalyzer' just to see how potent they are. an acquaintance of mine had one for the first time last year and he said, 'chris, i've been hearing all about your rum balls - i just gotta try one!' so he grabbed one and bit into it and nodded a little, at which point i said, 'waaaaait for it....' then BAM! the rum hit. he looked at me and exclaimed, 'holy crap man!!!! those are awesome!!!'

Margeret Jo McCullen: Wow! My mouth's watering just thinking about those Balls!
Teri Rialto: It's been years since I've seen any Balls.
Pete Schweddy: Would you like to see my Balls now?
Margeret Jo McCullen: Yeah. Whip them out.

Maybe I'm reading that wrong but do people actually decorate the tree on Christmas Eve? They always seem to do that on movies and television shows. We always put the tree up weeks in advance.
My traditions: - Monopoly on Christmas day
- One gift opening on Christmas eve
- A week of catching up on video games

Having relocated to Calgary about 8 years ago and not being close enough to any other family to celebrate with we have developed and borrowed traditions of our own. We have tortierre (meat pie) on Christmas Eve and open some gifts. We watch movies well into the night and snack on my wifes homemade peanut brittle, poppy #### and butter tarts. Christmas Day we are awakened bright and early by son looking to get at his stocking and remaining gifts. More movies and games and a chicken dinner (in place of the much too large turkey). Naturally we watch the World Juniors and actually prefer when they are in Europe as they are this year as that means we will have to get up at a crazy hour once or twice during the holidays to watch hockey. Funny how TSN coverage of the WJC has really been a part of my Christmas traditions since childhood.
