Default Facebook testing $100 charge to send messages to strangers

Not sure to put this here or in the Tech subforum, but oh well. Guess this is another way to monetize the Facebook. "If it is free - you are the product."

http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/11/38...s-to-strangers

Some Facebook users have seen an unusual popup when they attempt to send messages to people outside their network. It notes that the message will be filtered, but offers to deliver it to the top of the recipient's inbox anyway — for a cool $100.

Mashable reported seeing $100 as the fee to send a message to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, but other users have seen the same price for non-billionaires.

This is great! I'd love to set it up that people have to pay to send me messages.

$100 is nothing to a stalker who wants to harass someone.

Sounds like they need to just add a "Facebook Dating Site".

if facebook reports more than a $100 in revenue from this folly then i will start to watch for the 4 horsemen of the apocolypse......who would fork out $100 to send a message to someone.

Any page that wants to message its userbase would be one example. Right now a lot of those messages end up in the "other" folder and people never see them. A band could send a mass message to their "likes" for example, to announce a new song release, and this seems to be the way facebook figures they can monetize that relationship.

It won't be $100/message. As they note, this is just testing right now. At $0.20 per message or something of that nature, to send to 2000 people would be a cool $400.

Facebook should split the cash with the recepient. That way when creepers message my fiance, I am making money.

Law firms looking to get subtitional service.

IIRC some judges have allowed people to be served via Facebook.

You can get a court order if you have trouble with personal service.
