The Russians unvealed their newest nuclear Submarine the Yury Dolgoruky the first of a new flight of Borei class Nuclear Missile carrying submarines set sale on Sunday to take part in a naval submarine. The Borei class is a strategic nuclear weapons platform which carries between 16 and 20 solid fueled ICBM is to form a major part of the Russian's nuclear deterrence strategy.
Super quiet and able to dive to 480 meters this boat is expected to make things difficult for the American 688i class boats and might be a test for Seawolf and Virginia class hunter killers. This sub is a departure from Soviet missile boat philosophy as its designed to take part in 3 month deterrence cruises.
The Russians are also currently testing the new Yasen class fast attack boat with the first one in trials and expected to be commissioned this year and followed by more then 30 more. The Yasen class boat is considered to be a state of the art boat which is expected to surpass the 688i class boat and sit equivalent to the Virginia class submarine. Designed to run silent at 28 knots and with a maximum tested speed of 35 knots its one of the fastest subs since the ambitious but flawed Alpha Class sub (41 knots).
This coincides with an aggressive Russian build up of their surface navy and frontal aviation units.

Am I reading right that it took from 1996 to 2008 just to float it in water, and then another 4 years til today.......so 16 years to build start to finish?

Solid employment prospects in the manufacturing sector
I was a super nerd for this game as a kid, made after one of my favorite Clancy books red storm rising, naval and sub warfare simulation, soooo much fun.

The Russian's and Soviets have always been obsessed with fast submarines.
the Alpha was designed to almost be like a fighter interceptor, it was almost as fast as the torpedos that were fired at it, but it was noisy, the automation suite made it dangerous and the reactor wasn't very good, but because of its Titanium hull it had a crush depth at 1300 m. to put that into perspective the Virgina's crush depth is around 800 meters.
A high speed very quiet missile boat has a huge advantage in that it can remain undetected, but if it is detected it can still use its high speed and quieting to clear the area.

I think that's correct remember that there were lots of cuts to Soviet Naval construction as well, most of their projects were basically abandoned because there was no money to complete it.
Its also no secret that the Soviets are a huge fan of double hull construction and using fairly exotic and difficult to work with metals.
Putin has put a lot of money into rebuilding Russian ship yards and other military construction projects.

Isn't the saying that if you are looking for the American Ohio class SSBN you need to find the "hole" in the water?
The noise radiated by an Ohio is quieter then the noise of the water around it. The Soviets and then Russians have experimented with a large aperture sonar married to a computer that actually looks for holes in the water. If you can find the hole and track its movements its a good chance that its a sub.
There have been very few Ohio's that have been tracked for longer then 5 minutes, and that includes American's tracking their own boats.

I really wish they made an improvement on the Typhoon class submarines, maybe bigger. Floating something that big underwater just seems so much more impressive. The thing even had a gym with a fricking swimming pool!.

The Typhoon was considered the most comfortable sub for service men in the navy, but it was still cramped as hell.
There was a large space between the inner and outer hull, and the Soviets at the time filled that space with massive bathtub sized batteries which gave the Sub a heavy charge level and on top of that the thing was nearly indestructible.

"Comrades, our own fleet doesn't know our full potential. They will do everything possible to test us; but they will only test their own embarassment. We will leave our fleet behind, we will pass through the American patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll... while we conduct missile drills. And when we are finished, the only sound they will hear is our laughter, while we sail to Havana, where the sun is warm, and so is the...comradeship. A great day, comrades! We sail into history!"

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Well this new class is only 5 meters shorter than the Typhoon (Akula). So it's still very much a big boy (do the Russian's still refer to ships and aircraft as he's?).
