GAME 9: BATTLE OF ALBERTA - Round 1
Game Time : Monday, September 2nd at 3:00pm MDT @ McMahon Stadium
Televised : TSN in Canada and NBCSN in the US.
Calgary Stampeders (6-2) playing against the dismal Edmonton Eskimos (1-7) on Battle of Alberta Labour Day Classic. This is the first meeting between this two team this season. Stampeders better not take the Eskimos because they are better than their record. They lost their last three games in a close game and one of the reason was Kavis Reed seems to make some dumb decisions at the wrong time. Calgary on the other hand finally beat the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre.
OFFENSE :
QB Kevin Glenn completed 14 passes on 20 attempts for 228 yards and 2 TD. He left late in the game vs the Argos due to concussion related test. He will be the starting QB for the Stamps against the Eskimos though.
RB Jon Cornish missed last week's game but he will be back on Labour Day game. His last season's stats against the Eskimos: 63 carries 505 rushing yards with 8.0 yards average per carries. He scored 3 TDs in 4 games vs the Eskimos. Cornish rushed for over 180 yards twice against the Eskies. I remembered how much I enjoyed him blowing past JC Sherritt most of the game.
Cornish replacement last week RB Jonathan Williams (rushed for 82 yards) and Matt Walters, (rushed for 58 yards)did a great job vs the Argos.
R Marquay McDaniel been playing well lately and he's been Kevin Glenn's favorite target caught 7 passes for 106 yards and 1 TD last week against the Argos. Stamps will still be missing Lewis, Forzani, West, Hawthorne and Baumann in the lineup tomorrow. There is a possibility that WR Maurice Price will be back but if he can't play, one of the new signed receiver might be in the lineup.
Stamps offense : (Points per Game) 2nd best with 32.5 points per game. (TDs) 2nd with 26, (Rushing) 2nd 141.5 rushing yards per game, (Sacks allowed) 1st with only allowing 14.
DEFENSE :
Eskimos QB Mike Reilly has been playing well lately so our defense especially the DLine has to pressure him more. They should not give him time to thriw the ball and let him run the ball more instead. He is still a big threat as a runner but Eskimos have some big threat in receivers with Stamps, Koch and others.
DE Charleston Hughes (2 tackles, 1 QB sack, 1 forced fumble and also responsible for taking QB Ricky Ray out of the game early last week) have been playing with authority since he came back from injury. On the other side of the DLine, DE Cordarro Law with 5 tackles, 1 QB sack also been playing well. Well enough that he took Shawn Lemon out of the lineup for the past few games.
The ever consistent LB/DB Keon Raymond had a great game last week with 4 tackles and a pass knockdown. CB Fred Bennett been the best secondary we have this season. He had 2 tackles, a forced fumble and a pass knockdown.
Stamps Defense : (Points Allowed) 2nd with 25 per game, (TDs allowed) 4th allowing 20 and 4th in QB sacks with 22.
SPECIAL TEAM :
K Rene Paredes ended his consecutive field goal to 39 last week but he made up for it by making the last two important field goal late in the game.
Returner Larry Taylor still haven't scored a TD on kickoff or punt return but he came so close on a few of them. On the other hand, Eskimos Cory Koch is a big threat in punt return scoring a touchdown already this season. Stamps' Special Team coverage been playing well except the game in BC when Tim Brown broke free for a TD.
************************************************** ***
Calgary won 3 of the last 4 Labour Day Classic games. They beat the Eskimos in a close game last season 31-30 even though Eskies are one of the worst team in the CFL last season. They also beat them in 2010 and 2009.
GO STAMPS GO!!!

It looks like DL Odell Willis and MLB JC Sheritt will miss the game due to injury. For Stampeders WR Mo Price might draw back in the lineup.
Too bad about JC Sheritt, I always love seeing Cornish blows by him all the time and gained over 10 yards while Cutthbert and Suitor keeps talking how GREAT this guy is.

Mo Price will start at WR for the Stamps, they announced that earlier this week. Hopefully this is not a trap game for the Stamps.

Should be a great game with fantastic weather as usual! Any word if there will be the annual fighter jet fly by?

How many drops for Price today?
Stamps should take this one without too much trouble. I expect it to be similar to the Riders/Bombers game yesterday. Close at half time with the Stamps running away in the second half

Bo Levi Mitchell reminds me the young Jeff Garcia. His built, the way he throws. I will be happy to see him come close to matching Garcia's talent.

Deante Purvis playing in his first CFL game as Edmonton's KR. He was signed 10 days ago.
John White is starting for the injured Hugh Charles.
Eric Samuels is starting for Donovan Alexander who is a late scratch with an apparent injury. Its his first start as well in the CFL.

If I was an Edmonton fan I'd be pissed at that flag. Still, a nice opening drive!

That was a bad PI call on EDM (glenn to jabari). Not a penalty.

Bo Levi Mitchell 1 yard plunge TD Calgary.
2 first down catches by McDaniel and a questionable PI on Edmonton. I have to admit Stamps got lucky on that call.

Yeah, that was really bush league officiating on the pass interference call, but happy to have the break go the Stamps' way.

Follow the bouncing ball - No yards anyway, but heck of a return by McDaniel.

Carr needs to make that catch (Glenn put it right on the money). Oh well, tough to complain about a 10-0 lead early.
