Default Final exam of Zero in Error at U of C.

Hello CP. I hope I can get some quick help for this situation. A friend of mine wrote a final exam in one of her courses a couple weeks ago. For some odd reason, she is missing her final exam mark. She has a mark for mid term one & a mark for mid term two but the final exam mark shows a 0 with a final mark of only 64. She went in with an A but now has a C+. She assured me that she put her name & student ID number on her test as they reiterated this multiple times during the exam. They told all 600 students that if there was an error, then it would be the student’s fault and there would be no mark for them.

So what can she do now? I told her to call her professor. But we know how difficult it is to get a hold of professor’s sometimes, especially during the holidays. Does she has any other options? Is there a main line you can call for situations like this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Leave a message with the Prof and call the Dean in charge. Then call the Dean of the school.

I'd also call the registrar. Could be some secreatary/clerk in an office forgot to fill in a number somewhere. I doubt the Dean will talk to you about this.

That's when you burn down the Dean's office!

I had something similar happen to me in a class at the U of C, I had received a low mark on the final, much worse then I knew I possibly could of done. It was an easy fix, managed to find the professor and asked him to recheck my final exam mark. The marks he had in his spreadsheet didn't match what the registrar had on file and next day when I checked my online transcripts the grade had been changed.

Start with the professor if he/she proves to be elusive, work up the chain of command to the dean. In the end, I believe only the professor has the ability to change the grade but if he/she is dragging her feet pressure from higher on up may get you some results.

This happened to a friend of mine. Well somewhat similar. Got a terrible grade in the end which only would have been from a <50 final. Couldn't believe it so he tAlked to the prof. Turned out it was a spreadsheet error. He got an A.

This is such a load of crap. You pay thousands and thousands to attend university, and they treat with with such freaking contempt and laziness. I had a similar issue this last semester and had to climb the ranks up to the Associate Dean to get any resolution, but I do suggest she starts at the prof and goes from there.

I get so tired of the bureaucratic nonsense at these institutions sometimes, the stupid rules that can't be broken, the lack of flexibility. It drives me crazy.

^ I think the issue they are trying to avoid is a student claiming the professor lost the exam.

At the U of C (or at least when I was there), students need to sign an attendance sheet when they write the final. I can imagine some students thought they could beat the system by signing in and then turning in a blank exam and claming the professor lost the exam.

I'd contact the prof first. Sometimes they enter a number in the wrong column or make a typo after all (I've done it) - any reasonable prof would quickly check to confirm the mark. If that doesn't resolve the situation, then move up the chain.

I know profs can be hard to get ahold of, but just keep emailing them until they respond. Be persistent. I'm a graduate student and it can sometimes be the only way that works since they do not answer their office phone and often travel. If you do not get a response contact the dean of the faculty responsible for that course.

She could talk to students union and seek their assistance if the prof/dean don't budge.
