The plans for St. Patrick's Island are out, and it sounds fantastic:
Quote:
The TIP - At the top of the island and equipped with seating bars and an informal plaza, the Tip, is a respite and rest area designed to withstand annual flooding. The SEASONAL BREACH - The re-installation of a historic channel (breach) will allow Calgarians to explore the natural gravel bars of the Bow River in the summer or go for a skate in the winter. The RISE - The multipurpose grassy island knoll stands nine (9) metres high and is sloped on one side to offer some amazing vantage points of downtown Calgary. The Rise provides a perfect outdoor amphitheatre setting for community celebrations and in the winter will become a prime tobogganing site! The LOOKOUT - Situated at the eastern edge of the park (near the Calgary Zoo), the Lookout includes seating and picnic areas, a small amphitheatre, water features, and overviews of the lowland channel and boardwalks. The COVE - Along the southern edge of the island, the Cove is designed to encourage fishing, kayaking or wading. It provides quick access to the Lookout and the lowland channel riparian areas of the island. The LOWLAND CHANNEL - a second historic channel will be restored and deepened to create a seasonal, true riparian wetland within the core of the island which will greatly enhance the diversity of species that can take inhabit the island.
"The Cove" is where the beach/wading area will be, I believe.

St. Patrick's Island will soon be home to some new recreational areas including a beach, according to the landscaping plans unveiled Monday by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.
Sounds great! Too bad it's closed for 1.5 to 2 years while its all getting done, according to the global article.
One thing about that area is parts of it always seem to be under construction every summer, which sort of takes away from the overall scenery. So hopefully this will be the end of that.

Aren't they putting a new bridge in there as we speak? Or is this not the same location?
Yeah they are and that's the one I'm talking about... I just meant that while they are getting a bridge, it pales in comparison to the Peace Bridge to the west.

It won't look as fancy as the peace bridge but don't worry, according to the herald its going to cost as much(pre overages).
Wish they would have gotten another beautiful pedestrian bridge in that area but the rest of it sounds great.
I like the new bridge. It doesn't have the same presence from a distance that the peace bridge has but the sightlines while on the bridge are fantantastic. I love the arches leaning in towards the center.
And this bridge ends up actually being cheaper because the total bridge span is longer, there are 3 piers instead of 2 so doing this bridge as a Calatrava would have been more expensive than the peace bridge is.

There is going to be some killer downtown views from the bridge, can't wait. Maybe I'll give that bridge some love too?
Loved the conception drawings for the Sunalta LRT station, with the homeless guys and graffiti below that was photoshopped in. I think there was even zombies added in another photoshop job. Good times!
