In the wake of the recent Iranian election where conservative hardliners were elected and most Americans see nothing but flag burning and "Death to America!", it was refreshing to read something like this, to realize that there are Iranians who want democracy and secular rule, and realize the backwardness of everything while also cognizant of the current global political culture. This also feeds into something I saw on The Daily show where a guest was saying how many Iranians love the US being in Iraq and really don't hate America, rather, much of what we see on the media is staged by the government forces, or indoctrinated into groups of people.

Open letter to the free people of the world from Iranian students

I really like how these students point how that negotiations with EU leaders like Chirac and Schroeder are really not getting anywhere and are even harmful. These guys are like Neville Chamberlain to WWII Germany -> useless appeasers while the hardline conservatives develop Nuclear capabilities and push away and foster hatred toward the U.S. Reading this article, you can get a sense that the Iraq war does have good effects and is even appreciated by many people in Muslim countries which is somewhat amazing to read about.

the only reason iran has a hard-line islamic government is because the shah was SO BAD.

westernization = corruption for the poor peasantry of iran, so the only alternative was popular uprising.

the country has been slowly reforming since 1979, i thought when khatami was elected years ago it would be the death knell for the islamic revolution there.

but a curious thing has been happening since, iran is now surrounded on three sides by the united states military (though turkey would unlikely cooperate with invasion...), it has overflights by US spy planes, and there seems to be a lot of people saying that US-supported terror groups are amock in iran.

it seems to me that iran is swinging the other way, sadly.
