Check Stop Tweets
This might have been discussed before, but:
http://www.660news.com/news/local/ar...stop-locations
Quote:
A Calgary-based Twitter account isn't making friends with local law enforcement.
The moderator has made it their business to post the location of Checkstops around the city, giving drunk drivers ample time to avoid the police.
Since the start of the holiday season, posts have been coming in fast and furious; six alone this past weekend.
The person behind the account also offers to re-tweet any locations to followers for those who might be afraid to identify themselves on the page.
|
I am against this use of social media.

Completely against this, Drunk drivers need to be taken off of the road.
I find it a little sick that this person is basically enabling one of the worst personal choices possible.

I'm sure I'll get lambasted for this, but I'm actually for it.
Checkstops are annoying. As I don't drink and drive, all they do is waste my time.
I would guess that most drunk people aren't going to be checking twitter for checkstop locations before they make the idiotic decision to drive drunk.

So does he update it once a month?
Calgary has to be one of the cities where there are the fewest checkstops in North America. We would rather set up Photo radar and speed traps than devote resources to eliminate Drunk Driving.
I've been stopped at a checkstop once in this city, cops looked at me and waived me through.

Sorry for your inconvienice but I think that there are greater tragedies in life then the loss of your time, if it gets people off the road who can potential injure or kill innocent people.
And how do you know that people that think that they are capable of drinking and driving won't check their twitter.

I might be in the minority, but I don't see anything wrong with it. Sure it's a touchy subject, but he's not breaking any laws. And if you are against drunk driving check-stop tweets, then surely you must be against tweeting/posting about any speed traps or photo radar spots.

There seems to be no profit from checkstops. I drive all over the city in my job and I haven't encountered a single checkstop in 25 years. This despite the fact my work hours often go to midnight. The Twitter account is repugnant and irresponsible for sure, but if I drove around drunk I probably wouldn't worry about checkstops. They don't seem to exist.

I wish I read twitter before heading home last Thursday afternoon at 3. Check stop on 1A above hill going into Cochrane. Took 30 mins extra to get home and almost missed my appraiser coming to my house. Who sets up a checkstop between 2:30- 3:30 on a Thursday. When I finally got to the front of the check stop they closed it down. All that waiting to not even say "No Sir I haven't been drinking this afternoon" so let down

I have been driving in Calgary for 14 years and have been through maybe 2 or 3 checkstops.

They had one setup on Southbound Sarcee right after the 16th Ave Off Ramp last week too around 3:30 PM. It seemed like a really odd time and location for such an operation. Last winter I also encountered one on a Wednesday or Thursday at 6:00 AM on Northbound Deerfoot. Luckily I was going southbound, so I didn't get held up in traffic, but that too seemed like a really odd time

During the christmas season there are afternoon parties, and afternoon drinks. I know I get many more invites for christmas luncheons.

I understand that, but wouldn't it make more sense then to have a checkstop checking people coming out of downtown, rather than people coming into the city?

I don't know for sure, but I would suggest there is a reason for the location. I doubt they throw darts at a dartboard.

I'm no lawyer, but this seems like obstruction to me. For check stops, speed cams, radar traps, whatever.

CPS claims Calgary is the only city in Canada to have checkstops 52 weeks of the year.

If cops and associated agencies were a bit more on the ball, they could make use of this re-tweeter to spread disinformation on checkstops. Specifically, tweet to create more checkstop locations than are actually being done. Such a campaign could serve to magnify the risk of potentially encountering a checkstop (and nullify the warnings offered by the checkstop tweets.
Heck even the average citizen could play this game... (hint.. hint..)
