Default Can you buy paper/chinese/sky lanterns in Calgary?

I was thinking this might be an interesting thing to do after Christmas dinner... are there any places in Calgary that sell sky lanterns?

Thanks CP!

I've been wondering the same thing. Let me know if you get an answer. (I always thought that it would be an epic tradition if whenever the Flames get a win, people all over the city send up sky lanterns. Probably some bylaw against it, but it would be awesome to be out on the town, not able to listen to the game, and all-of-a-sudden you see these lanterns floating up in the air and you'd know that the Flames just won).

While pretty I'm sure, the DVR-ing part of me would absolutely hate this.

Don't bother looking in Saskatoon.

Flying lanterns banned

By Betty Ann Adam, The StarPhoenix August 29, 2012

Flying lanterns with open flame have been banned in Saskatoon.

The enchanting fad, which is becoming popular at weddings, has sparked concern among fire officials who say releasing an open flame on the breeze is a fire hazard.

“There’s no control once you let it go,” Saskatoon fire marshal Wayne Rodgers said.

The lanterns, which originated in Asia, are paper balloons with a small candle or fuel cell that heats the air inside, causing it to rise and drift on the breeze.

The provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island banned the lanterns earlier this month. They are also banned in several European countries and Australia.

Local retailers have been asked to remove the lanterns from store shelves and residents, who can still buy them elsewhere, are asked not to use them.

The fire marshal has authority under the Fire Prevention Act to prohibit activities it considers a serious danger to life or property. Those who fail to comply with a request to stop could face a $5,000 fine, Rodgers said.

Thanks Minnie. I contacted these folks. They sell sky lanterns at a price of 5 dollars each or 4 dollars each if the order is over 50. I will go and buy some from them this weekend. I will let you all know how it goes.

While I haven't read the entire article, I can see why it is banned in certain places. In dry places like Australia and even Calgary, grass or forest fires are just waiting to happen and I presume it is possible for Chinese Lanterns to ignite a crazy blaze.

I think firing guns in the air would probably be safer than launching flaming paper bags in the vinyl clad suburbs of Calgary.

This has just sparked a great idea for a novel technological improvement to the traditional flaming doggie doo bags....

Get a few dozen guys and launch an airboune blitzkrieg upon Edmonton from Nisku.

Okay, to address the doubters in this thread... I do not plan to go through with the lanterns if it is windy that evening, pretty much the only thing I can think of that would cause this to be a problem. The paper used to make the lanterns is fire ######ant and the lanterns carry only enough fuel to get them to about 1000 feet and then they go out and slowly float back down to earth.

Because of the design of the lanterns, unless it is crazy windy, as long as the lantern is lit it should continue rising (hot air rises into the lantern, keeping it afloat) until it goes out.

I hope that helps some of the fears in this thread. I will let you know how it goes and hopefully get video to put on youtube.
