So we have one of those old TVs where, in order to hook up a DVD player, we need to use an RF modulator. The problem is that with anything we watch on DVD, any colour on screen that's too bright appears as simply white. Depending on the show, it sometimes makes in unwatchable. Especially my Samurai Jack DVDs. We've tried changing brightness settings on the TV, to no avail. And I know the problem isn't with the DVD player, because I get the same result when I plug my laptop into the RF modulator. So what I'm wondering is if this is a problem with the modulator we got, or is this a problem that happens all the time with hooking up DVDs to old TVs? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but TVs are so cheap these days... Bargain finder probably has dozens of tvs under $100.

You can get a 27" tv for under $200 at Superstore.

what kind of modulator did you get? I've heard of cheap ones doing that. Like anything else you get what you pay for.

How old is it? Take it back and have it replaced or refunded and get a better one/different model.

Monstercable has them for $59.99 and you don't get any better than Monster Cable. If you're willing to buy online, you can get a Nexxtech/RadioShack brand modulator from "The Source by Circuit City" (formerly Radio Shack Canada) for $29.99. I found they worked really well in my tenure at that retail store... whatever every you want to call the division of InterTAN Canada.

I bought one at Futureshop for $29.99 and it works fine.

How are you connecting the DVD player to the RF Modulator? If the problem is in the brightness, then perhaps the S-Video signal on the modulator is messed up because in S-Video, one of the separate lines inside is brightness/contrast (luminance) while the other is crominance.

You wouldn't have those problems with RCA jacks though.
