Story from here, but I'll rearrange to make it read better (IMO):

The Department of Homeland Security raised the U.S. terror alert from yellow to orange in December 2003... At the time Homeland Security Chief Tom Ridge stated, "These credible sources suggest the possibility of attacks against the homeland around the holiday season and beyond." The decision to elevate the alert resulted in the cancellation of almost 30 international flights.

What were these credible sources? -->

the CIA reported that technicians at its Directorate of Science and Technology had concluded that terrorists had embedded secret codes in the news crawl on Al-Jazeera's Arab-language channel, NBC News reported on Tuesday. It added that the technical staff had specifically identified target coordinates and listed flight numbers... In the end, the Office of Homeland Security determined that the CIA's conclusion had no basis in fact.

Something to think about the next time they announce that "We have credible information indicating..."

The Department of Homeland Insecurity is a joke. They do nothing but raise nonsensical warnings and grease the palms of those who support the president's agenda. You will notice that there have been next to no warnings since the election? All of those during the election were bogus and were released to scare the population into voting one way. What is funny is that if the public were really aware of the actual threats, and the number of real escalations that they are not notified of, they would not feel "safe" like they do. The whole thing is a sham from the word go.

Its a bit of a flimsy department, no doubt...

but to look at it on the other hand, if they didn't create something like this, people would freak out that the government isn't doing enough, and god forbid if something happens again.

Its really just an expensive security blanket... makes you feel a little safer at night, and it might even stop a legit threat or two.

Given the ridiculous paranoia that exists within the US, I would imagine that most sheeple sleep better at night knowing that the government is "stopping" attacks on their homeland. Even if logic says many of the supposed threats arent credible, man is not a logical animal.
