Default Magnitude 7.3 Earthquake in Northeast Japan, Tsunami Warning,

(Reuters) - A strong earthquake centered off the coast of northeastern Japan shook buildings as far as Tokyo and led to a tsunami warning for coastal areas of the northeast, public broadcaster NHK said on Friday.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, the U.S. Geological Survey said. That was revised from an earlier estimate of 7.4.

A warning for a one meter tsunami was issued for the coast of Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan, which was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.

TOKYO—A strong earthquake has jolted northeastern Japan and authorities have issued a warning of a possible tsunami.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Miyagi prefecture at 5:18 p.m. (0818 GMT) Friday. The epicenter was 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) beneath the seabed.

The warning said the tsunami could be as high as 2 meters (2.19 yards).

This one wasn't too bad. There were mild tremors for about a minute or so where I live. On the news here they were reporting the Tsunami is about 120 cm max in some places, so no real damage is expected.

Are there any reports of flight delays/cancellations to Tokyo? I have friends flying this morning there.

I felt tremors in Tokyo when I was there last Christmas. Most people didn't notice much, but the tourists were the ones who really stopped and was wondering what happened.

That said, Tokyo is the most well-prepared city in the world in terms of building and foundation design to resist earthquakes.
