Tim Murray to be named Sabres GM
John Shannon @JSportsnet
Sabres' Lafontaine is spending the evening contacting some GM candidates...telling them they don't have the job...
John Shannon @JSportsnet
...as @DougMaclean said yesterday, it appears Tim Murray is going to be the new GM in Buffalo.
update:
confirmed by McKenzie:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Pending successful negotiation of contract with BUF, OTT assistant GM Tim Murray will be next GM of the Sabres.

Tim Murray enters his seventh season with the Senators after being named assistant general manager on July 5, 2007. He also serves as the general manager of Ottawa’s American Hockey League affiliate, the 2011 Calder-Cup champion Binghamton Senators.
Murray’s NHL experience began in 1993-94 when he served as an amateur scout with the Detroit Red Wings. He joined the Florida Panthers in 1994, where his scouting career evolved until his departure as the club’s director of amateur scouting in 2002.
Murray served as director of player personnel, responsible for overseeing the amateur draft and college free agents, with the Anaheim Ducks from 2002-03 to 2004-05 before moving to the New York Rangers as assistant director of player personnel in July 2005. During his time with the Rangers, Murray was tasked with scouting the amateur ranks and evaluating potential free agents.
Tim is the son of Bryan Murray’s brother, Barrie. On July 21, 2012, he joined his uncles, Bryan and Terry, as inaugural inductees in Shawville’s Hockey Wall of Fame.

Not a guy I would look at as best candidate available for the Flames, so that's good. Certainly allows the Flames to have their pick.

I don't know much about him, but I like that it leaves the candidates (Benning, Futa) that I like for the Flames post theoretically available.

Yes but he later recanted:

2. Okay, Buffalo's GM search. When Bruins assistant GM Jim Benning didn't go to the world juniors, eyebrows went up. It's certainly unusual for a team to be without a major voice at that event. As we mentioned on Hotstove, that created a lot of buzz and belief it meant he was the favourite in Buffalo. Now, the focus shifts to Ottawa's Tim Murray. Should Saturday's speculation turn out to be incorrect, that's on me and I don't hide from it.

not among the rumoured Flames candidates, so that's awesome! It was between him and Benning in the end, I believe.

Need to hire someone before the season ends imo. Just to be sure Burke can beat out other teams that might be looking for new managers come the off-season. Hopefully we have our pick of the litter now.

I can't say that I know any of these candidates, but at this point I say that we should just avoid hiring people that are likely to promote the hiring of family. We have seen to much of this with the Sutters, Buttons and Feaster/Hartley.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
BUF GM finalists Mike Futa (LA)/Brad Treliving (PHX) informed today they were out. Jim Benning's (BOS) window to talk to BUF expired.
Friedman has been out of the loop on these GM searches... he reported that the Kings told the Sabres no on Futa.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Pending successful negotiation of contract with BUF, OTT assistant GM Tim Murray will be next GM of the Sabres.
