Summer get away 2013(Shuswap or Okanagan)
My family and I are slowly bringing in ideas for a 10 day get away, but not sure where to go? We want to boat but we do not own one, we probably have to rent.
Would it be cheaper to stay in a hotel or a condo?
There will be four adults going who love to boat and have fun.
Camping is also an option. If we camp how many months do we have to register for a site?

If I were you I'd look on vrbo/owner direct & rent a cabin in either location. The Ok is busier while the Shuswap is a little more quiet. I guess it just depends on what you're looking for. I rent my Shuswap cabin out and I can tell you that you should book before January for next summer. We are usually fully booked by March.

I was just in Penticton for Ironman weekend, and having been to Shuswap a number of times, I have to say that I enjoyed the Okanogan more. The vineyards are georgeous and the wine tastings are a lot of fun. There was a couple who rented a huge house on Summerland which is just outside Penticton. If I were to go again, I will go that route next time as opposed to the motel. Just make sure you are not there for Ironman weekend.

Shuswap is awesome, I've gone there almost every year since I was 3. I camp and go away a lot, I'd say my second favorite lake in the area would be Koocanusa. Its definitely not as busy as OK or Shuswap but it's a great area, on the Canada side or the US side of the lake

I'd personally rather go for a swim surrounded by cedar forests than drive around all day listening to middle class white women talk about how fruity or oaky the finish is after every sip, so Shuswap for this guy.

The last few years we've stayed at Summerland Waterfront Resort. It's pricey but it's new, a full condo setup, boat rentals at the dock, great restaurant next door and still close to Penticton, etc. Only issue is the lake can get pretty rough when the afternoon wind blows so you need to stick to some of the bays for good tubing, etc.

Bump!
Hey was thinking of heading to the Shuswap area myself. Never been, but am sure a lot of people on CP has! I was thinking of staying in either Sicamous or Salmon Arm.
What kinds of things and places should I visit in that area?
Thanks in advance.

If you have a boat/rent one (or there is also road access I believe), visit Margaret Falls. Its a waterfall with a cave inside of it that you can climb into (fits like 2 people). And there is a beach as well nearby.

just a reminder about boating......

BC Boating Regulations
As of September 15, 2009 all boaters operating in British Columbia waters are required to have the Pleasure Craft Operator Card in order to operate a powered watercraft. This is a federal law that applies in all provinces, including BC. Powered watercraft includes watercraft fitted with any size motor — even an electric trolling motor.

Fuel is so expensive, it is keeping many boats off the water.

I personally wouldn't stay in either. The places on the lake that are less inhabited are a lot nicer. Look for something down the Sunnybrae Canoe Point road. Almost all of that stretch is awesome, besides the actual "town" of Sunnybrae.

Lake Okanagan Resort rents boats. They also have rental units, a golf course (it sucks), and a nice beach.
It's about 15 minutes outside Kelowna on Westside Road.

my advice would be take your bikes and ride the kettle valley railway - it is spectacular and an easy ride for the whole family.
if you are into some downhill lift assisted mtn biking, silverstar above vernon is a lot of fun to bike at and the trails are very good.
