Default International shipping/freight forwarding advice/info request

Hello,

If anybody has knowledge or experience with international shipping/freight forwarding I would love to hear it!

I will be sending a number of boxes consisting mainly of small household goods, books, etc as well as some small furniture items (disassembled baby crib for example) overseas. As we would not have a time crunch they will be sent surface.

I have done the search on google but from there it is pretty much a crapshoot in terms of price, service, reliability etc.

Thanks.

I used to prep these shipments when I was in my 20's, there are some moving companies that have overseas divisions that can handle all of the packing, shipping, customs, inventory, etc. I know that MI Group and Starline are in the business, maybe talk to one of their sales people.

If you want to make all the arrangements yourself then you might want to talk to a customs broker about the paperwork, there is lots of it. If you are packing yourself then make sure you wrap everything very well, use double the stuffing material that you normally would. Things usually get moved by container on ships and they drop those containers from a few feet up on a regular basis. Also make sure you tape up all seams on the boxes and write an inventory on each box listing it's contents. You'll also want to number each box and do up an inventory of each item and contents for customs. You can buy "overseas wrap" which is a cushioned wrap that is soft on one side and plastic on the other, use this to wrap any items that aren't in boxes. We used to wrap items in the overseas wrap and then use flat cardboard to make custom boxes for each item.

It's certainly easier to use a overseas mover but it can be expensive.
