Icon40 Lowly Pens begin the reconstruction

The day started early with a deal with the Vancouver Canucks that has been in the talks for two days:

Chris Krieder was packaged up with prospect Teuvo Terravainen along with Colby Armstrong for agitating winger Brad Marchand.

Thanks to Mitch for the patience and the talks over the past two days.

All of a sudden, Goffie realized he had 2 Bruins on his team.

And then the Dynamite exploded....

In another deal that has been in the works for a couple days the Penguins came to an agreement with the Phoenix Coyotes on an 8 player blockbuster:

To Pittsburgh:
Corey Perry
Loui Eriksson
TJ Oshie
Matt Carle

To Phoenix
Alexander Ovechkin
Patrice Bergeron
Brad Marchand
Alex Edler

This move was a massive shakeup. We didnt want to give up on Ovie, but he didn't mesh well here. Bergeron had a slow start and we are reaching a boiling point so we need to find some instant chemistry.

These were some fun talks that went around in circles for awhile, but in the end both teams are happy with what they got and hopefully it kickstarts both teams.

Look for the Pens to make many more deals....probably not of this magnitude though.

Nice little deal. Think I like it for Phoenix a tiny bit more but it's pretty damn close.

This deal was really really tough for me, but in the end I went with it since I felt Ovechkin has a solid chance of regaining his elite scoring touch. Ovechkin had a great start to the season in Chicago (17P in 15GP) but sucked in Pittsburgh, like many other players, so we are not worried on that front.

What can I say about Bergeron? He is a Phoenix GM Favorite. Love the way he plays and he has amazing FO and DF stats and will be a great guy in all roles for Phoenix.

In regards to Edler-Carle, we find Carle to be really good in the sim. However, one constant thing we noticed throughout game after game was the lack of production from the blue line. We believe Edler will be a big boost in this department over Carle, as his scoring stat goes from 52-73. This should help our PP and overall production hopefully.

As per Marchand-Oshie, we think very highly of both of them, but Marchand is a favorite from coming from the Halifax' Mooseheads. We love his pesty two way game.

This deal was definitely done over a long period of time, and required patience on the ends of both GM's. It looked like any chance of a deal was over until it finally clicked for both.

All in all, we did this deal because we think it makes us a better team.

The Marchand deal is exactly the kind of deal Van needed to make. Great return there but it makes sense for both teams as Pitt adds a significant roster piece without subtracting a cphl piece (sorry Armstrong).

Need more time to digest the phx deal but that's a lot of really high end talent on the move. Good work to gents!

Wow, major trade! Kreider and Tuevo is a good return for Marchand.

As for the small and insignificant deal, age and OV wise, even Steven. Given it's so even, I have to give it to the team that got the best player in the deal, so I'd say Phoenix by a bit.

The opportunity to get two really nice young pieces in TT and Kreider was too much too pass up. We're sad to give up Marchand, seeing as he's still young and we feel like he can and will improve, but we also believe that if Kreider reaches his full potential he can be a dominant forward. He impressed greatly in the playoffs and there is no reason to believe he won't impress even more. The only knock on him and TT is the lockout, because otherwise Kreider may have been playing in the NHL by now working towards a reasonable rating next season.

As for the 2nd deal it seems pretty even all-round but Pheonix gets the best player, and not only that but Ovi is at his all-time lowest value, if he returns to form he can be the best player in the world (again).
