Retirement Home
so it appears that my parents can no longer live on their own (dad having heart trouble with recent pacemaker installed and mom showing signs of dementia/general forgetfulness) - my sister has located a decent looking retirement residence in Arbour Lake (I am going to tour it on Saturday).
Please tell me what kind of things do I need to know/pass along Pro-Tips...
It is my understanding that rent will be a % of thier income and it appears they get 3 square per day. Residence offers shuttle service for appointments etc.
socially, it will likely be a good move for my mom, as she does much better with mental stimulation from peers.
anybody else have parents in a similar residence? anyone have any expereince with this place in Arbour Lake?
Thanks folks.

My mom is in a senior's facility. She is in their independent living wing where she has a 1 bedroom apt with kitchenette, small living room, and of course bathroom. She really likes it.
She eats in the general dining room for lunch and supper but fixes her own breakfast in her apartment. Someone comes in to do light housekeeping once a week and they change her towels and linens also. If she doesn't show up for meals they send someone down to check on her to make sure she's ok. She also has a medical emergency box thingy on the wall where she just has to press the button and someone will respond immediately.

Qualtity of food is huge.
Get an idea of activities, do they do anything that gets them out of the facility.
Ask them for references from other families that have put their parents or loved ones in there.
Look for the hobby room and makes sure its not a workshop for making cheap knockoff leather ware that sells on the streetsof Hong Kong

Rocky Ridge retirement is really nice. I used to work there as a part time maintenance while I was in school. Very nice and the food is great!

Darn, I was going to post that happy gilmore reference.
Actually, my Baba lives in one. She's 91 and she loves the bowling alley they have.

I was a volunteer for a few retirement home over a number of years. These are the things I would look for.
Look at the food they serve and the quality of it. It can vary quite a bit from one place to another. Do they have chef who prepares all the food or is it shipped in and reheated. Involve your parents on that part of the decison as they will have to eat that food everyday
Look at what the home offers in the way of entertainment for the seniors. Most homes have recreation therapists that create and run activities for the seniors. Talk to someone involved in this and ask them what activities they run and how often these activities are offered.
Walk around the place and look for familes that are visiting thier parents. Ask them for thier opinon of the home and the staff that run it.
Also check the overall condition of the home itself. Is it clean and sanitary and well maintained.
Hope that helps.

How does the % of income work? Do people who have saved for their later years pay more than those that haven't?

^ based on what my sister has told me, your "rent" equates to about 65% of your gross income - so yes, this would mean that different people pay different amounts, i guess they must request a copy of your income tax return.
my sister has toured the place with my mom, and i am taking both of my parents there on saturday, we are going to stay for lunch as well.
according to the website, the place has a chef.
they want the wallets on the streets of hong kong in 48 hours, so i hope my parents can keep up with the expected production levels.

Northendzone,
Are there independent living apartments available in this place? My mom really likes hers. She had a studio apartment at one time in a retirement facility and after living in a house for most of her life, she really didn't like living in just one room. The apartment feels like more of a home to her. She likes having a separate bedroom and a kitchen.

Rerun - I have not yet seen the place, but I think it is getting to the point where cooking is becoming too much of a chore for my mom, and my dad only likes about 5 things - two of them being hot dogs. having meals prepared for them would likely be a good thing.

Most places that have independent living apartments also have the option of those residents taking their meals in the residence dining room.
A kitchenette is nice because it allows the person to make their own breakfast cereal/toast/coffee at the time they chose in the morning and also gives them the ability to make a late nite snack too. When you just live in a 1 room unit you always have to leave it in order to eat, in most cases... not unlike living in a hotel room without a kitchenette.
