Avs - Pens Blockbuster

The Avalanche and Penguins completed a blockbuster deal this morning seeing two superstar players changing zip codes. Here is how the deal breaks down:

Ilya Kovalchuk
Mathew Dumba

To Pittsburgh
Nicklas Backstrom

2014 2nd (col)

With 2013 1st round picks gaining value by the day, I felt I needed to acquire one. It also helps that it is my pick just in case the wheels fall off, I have some control in my pick. Adding a blue chip prospect in Mathew Dumba was also a major factor in getting this deal complete. His numbers are not great but he is also playing on an average Red Deer team.

It is hard to deal away a 24 year old franchise player but he wasn't performing in the sim the way I wanted. Kovalchuk is also having a rough year in the sim but I hope Spezza can get him going. On paper, the combo of Spezza - Kovalchuk is scary so hopefully it translates.

Solid return for a very very good young player in backstrom. Good deal for both I think.

I actually think that's a fair deal for both teams. Kovalchuk will likely be rated similar to Backstrom for the next 4-6 years and before then Dumba and even the 1st could be making a significant impact on the roster.
