Default Compaction question

I'm renovating my basement. Part of that includes running additional drainage and water lines. In that process, some of the basement slab was removed to expose the water line and drain pipe. So now I can see the water and drainage lines.

Around the hole, on top of the concrete slab, the contractors have piled the fill. The fill looks to me to be 1/2 inch stones, but I'm far from an expert.

The main hole is about 2 feet by 2 feet, by 2 feet deep. I'm concerned that after the plumbing is complete, how do I know when they replace the fill, that they've compacted it enough. I don't want to have any risk of a sinking slab over that area.

There is no compaction equipment sitting in the basement. They might have plans to bring something in, but I want to know they've done it right.

Any suggestions for how I can know they're doing this right? I know its not a large hole but I'm concerned.

They'll probably drill holes into the existing slab and make a rebar mesh. You'll never know there was ever a hole, except for the finish of the concrete.
