The Sport Supplement Thread
After years of not supplementing at all, and to be honest, not really working out seriously, I have gotten back into things.
As such, I decided to start supplementing again and poked my head into a few supplement shops... wow, was I confused.
Now I am not an expert on this subject, but in the past tried to educated myself the best I could.
I thought I would start a thread to discuss the topic. Moreover, I was hoping people could recommend some good products.
In the past, I generally took a rapidly absorbed protein (whey) with some high glycemic carb with creatine and glutamine post workout. Then an hour later I would take a half serving of a slowly absorbed protein (casein). I would then take another half scoop of the later at night before bed. Is this still a good set-up?
What brands are good these days for protein? BSN syntha 6? Muscle milk? Myofusion? (at least from my reading). I am really stickler for taste so I am looking for something that tastes alright.
I have also found the cost of supplements a little hard to swallow. Anyone have experience with bodybuilding.com? Does the exchange, shipping and possible customs fees still make it cheaper then the expensive Canadian online sites?
Thanks in advance.

The cost in Canada are brutal, especially GNC. Unfortunately, I'm usually too lazy to order online and when I want something I go to the store anyway. Popeye's and Sampsons are pretty decent as far as stores go.

I'm of the opinion of sport supplements should supplement your diet of whole foods.
So instead of casein after your post-workout shake, I would just eat a meal.
I've tried the BSN syntha 6 and it tastes decent. I think it's one of the better ones out there.

That's a lot of protein. How much protein do you get in a day? Do you even know how much you need?
You're complaining about the price but I would guess you're getting a lot more protein than you could possible need. What do you know about creatine? Glutamine? Do you need them?
Also, for something to taste good and have no sugar, it obviously has artificial sweeteners. If you're worried about your health then you should question some of the fillers they put in simple supplements such as protein. Many of the additives/supplements, etc, that at one time were considered safe are now off of shelves. Even a "safe" sweetener such as sucralose still lacks a lot of research to back it. And that's not even getting into the aspartames and the acesulfame-potassiums.

Dude you just can't help yourself, can you. A lot of protein? How do you figure? He didn't post any numbers, heck he says he takes half the serving. But nooo you've got to poke your head in screaming too much! Too funny.
BW, your supplements seem fine to me, although I would take half of the creatine before workout and other half after workout. I don't take it anymore though, right now I'm on whey only. Stuff is obscenely expensive here.

He just can't help himself, get off your high horse, he is allowed to post his opinion just as much as you are allowed to post yours. The fact of the matter is that a lot of the excess protein is going to travel right into his kidneys are be excreted via urine. That is the simple facts of the matter from a physiological standpoint.

I don't particularly want to derail this thread, but from my research, my degree of activity, metabolism, size and other factors, I consume what I feel is the right for me. So yes, I am well aware of how much I need.
And yes, I have done a lot of research on creatine and glutamine and for me, I notice a difference.
I am not concerned about sweeteners at all. I am well aware of the research.
If you want to create a thread on the merits of supplementation or nutrition, by all means, fill your boots.... this isn't the thread.

I'm fairly certain that a thread about supplements warrants the discussion of the efficacy of them.
There are so many people that take whatever their buddy or some guy on the internet suggests, I'm just trying to bring some logic to the topic.
Now for my sake, do you care to divulge the specific quantity of protein one may need? Or where one can find this information? I'm sure many of the people who will read this thread would find that information very useful. It would be pretty useless to be spending so much on supplements (which a lot of you who take so many are so quick to admit) when you don't even need them!

Then he should have no problem letting us know the specific numbers, now should he? I'm sure a lot of people are wondering how much protein they need. And it would only save him money if he found out he's taking too much.

How could you possibly know what supplements are tailored to his individual needs? Do you know his activity level? Goals? General prescription doesn't work for medication, so why would it work for supplements? You don't give radiation therapy to someone who has a cold.

I used to consume about two grams of protein for every pound I weighed, so about 370 grams daily. I was seriously lifting at the time, any other time should be about a gram per pound. I only ever loaded on creatine, never used it as a daily supplement. I barely took anything else, so I cannot comment much.

As I said, please make your own thread.
I don't need or wish to discuss efficacy of them. That is not the intent of the thread. I have asked some pretty specific questions and don't wish to debate the benefits or risks.
Please give me, and the others that are interested, the same courtesy you would want yourself.
You clearly have an opinion on them. I can respect that. Please respect my request.

This is a sport supplement thread. I am discussing sport supplements.
Feel free to:
a) Ignore my posts.
b) Put me on ignore.
c) Consult a moderator. If they deem my discussion inappropriate then I will cease.
I certainly don't care if you want to continue to live in ignorance about your health and the supplement industry. But for those who don't, I'm going to try and provide a balance to the overwhelming ignorance that there is about this issue.

Of course he's allowed to post his opinion, but does he really need to repeat the same stuff in every bodybuilding topic? People want to talk about supplements, use supplement, see results, wonder how other people get results so why the need to derail the thread. If he starts a thread about the best scotch out there I am not going to wade in talking about how alcohol is bad for you and how you drink too much of it.
If you eat too much of Vit C, your body will excrete it just as it will excrete excess protein. Do you eat half of your orange worrying you will end up eating "too much" or do you eat "more" to ensure you have "enough" and let the body deal with the "rest"?
Supplements are called supplements because that's what they do, they supplement your regular diet and help you achieve better result. Show me one post where a lifter claims that you should just stuff your face with powder and the miracle will come. No. Everyone realizes that you need a proper diet as a foundation of a healthy life-style. Supplements help you to push you the extra mile. Also, maintaining healthy eating habits 24/7, 7 days a week is not always possible. People have different schedules, work shifts etc. Taking supplements (ie protein bar, a shake) is still better than cramming a big mac down your throat.

As for the taste, now I will sound like a sales rep (haha) but have you tried Champion Nutrition chocolate flavour? Best I've tried so far. Dymatize is close second. Last year recommended it to Azure, he said he's gonna try it but I haven't seen him around for ages.

I posted in a similar thread a few weeks ago and have recently bought a 'suppliment' and am curious if it is any good.
Just a bit of history first, I am working out 4-5 times a week and am far from a muscle head. I just want to get my body into great shape before my 35th birthday which is only a couple years away I am getting much stronger and feel really good, but want to make sure I fuel my body as much as possible. My diet is decent but I struggle to take on enough fuel immediately following my morning workouts, so that is why I am experimenting with a suppliment.
It is from Costco and is called Lean Fit, here are the ingredients:
-Whey Protein Concentrate
-Whey Protein Isolate
-Xanthan gum
-Sodium Chloride
-Sucralose (26mg per 32g serving)
-Bromelain
-Amylase
-Papain and Lipase Enzymes
Is this stuff junk? Or is it ok to take?
Thanks in advance!

I will dive into this thread deeper when I am at work tomorrow but...
Fitnessone.com
I have ordered from here multiple times, my last order got here in 4 business days, but it says 5-10 on the order. 30-60% off supplements, never had a complaint from me or any of my friends that use it. Honestly Pop Eyes and GNC over charge drastically for their stuff, do not pay those prices..

Besides taste, has anyone actually found noticeable differences with different whey proteins? I don't find much different from any of them, so I've shifted from buying the more expensive, highly reviewed ones to just getting the Costco stuff.
Only other supplements I've taken are Gaspari Superpump 250 & Size On. Superpump is amazing!

+1 to superdump...errr I mean superpump. I almost can't workout without it which is kind of scary. I can get home from work totally tired and ready to fall asleep but I throw a glass of that stuff down my throat and I'm wide awake until at least 11pm.
