Hyundai, Kia overstate mileage on 1 million cars, offer compensation

Quote:
— yesterday, Hyundai announced that the owners of more than one million Hyundai and Kia vehicles, including 172,000 in Canada, will get money back for the extra fuel they use, as the South Korean automakers overstated gas mileage on 13 models.

And those owners will keep getting money back for as long as they drive their car.

It is the biggest fuel-efficiency mistake in the auto industry in at least the past 12 years — only two similar errors have been discovered since 2000, each involving single models. And the payback could end up costing the companies hundreds of millions of dollars.

Canadian car owners — about 41,000 Kia and 131,000 Hyundai vehicles are affected — will get a debit card that will reimburse them for the extra fuel they have burned. Payments will be made each year for the lifetime of the car, with a 15 per cent inconvenience premium added.
My agenda for starting this thread: Spread the word to other Hyundai & Kia owners.

Mine is on the list. You can check your Hyundai here.

You can chekc your Kia here.

Mine is on the list as well. I've noticed it isn't nearly as good on gas as I had expected. Good for Hyundai!

These payments aren't going to be very big. A third of a litre per 100 km means that you would get about $4 per 1000k on your car, as a rough estimate.

They gave this example in that article:

Quote:
Chad Heard, spokesman for Hyundai Canada, said a Toronto car owner who drove 20,000 kilometres would get $97.75 back, on an average gas price of $1.29 per litre.
Adjust for Calgary average fuel prices and you are probably pretty darn close with your $4/1000k

As a manufacturer, do you write those cheques to avoid a giant lawsuit ala Mazda?

You win by not having to drive a Kia or Hyundai.

I've been happy with the mileage on my Elantra. Better than any of my past vehicles.

Of course they didn't. But they did something proactive and were honest about it. They could have simply did nothing and probably would have gotten away with it.

This is a reaction to findings by the EPA, they wouldn't have "gotten away with it". There was a lawsuit filed in July. There is a link in the OP, that provides that information.
