Job Interviews in Public Areas
From time to time when I'm downtown or in shopping centers, I see people being interviewed for jobs in food courts or couch seating areas. Has this happened to you? How was it?
I've never been interviewed or interviewed somebody in this setting. I think it would be really distracting. If I was the one being interviewed I would be distracted by the noise or my eyes and mind would wonder. For example a guy in a Flames jersey would walk by and I'd think about the lockout. Something like that.

Post partum insanity coupled with lockout depression. Yup, purple'll do that to ya.

Purple is the official color of crowdsourced community content.
In other words, GirlySports represents a consortium of interested internet posters concerned about public interviews and their associated distraction potential.

They're likely being interviewed for retail jobs. Not to mention there probably isn't any room to do it in their facility.
It isn't like you're being screened to be an engineer, they're just making sure you're not a mouth breathing moron.

It's a lot more relaxing than meeting at their offices.
Neutral ground, and they get to buy you a coffee.

That makes sense. Although I've seen some downtown. Usually outside a starbucks.
And Locke is right. The original idea is to change things up a bit and make purple my sad NHL lockout posting colour.
I'm hoping the lockout ends soon
You guys are too uptight! The board needs a girl's touch!

Not necessarily true. I'm an engineer and a lot of my initial meetings with potential employers are out for coffee or lunch. There's usually a more formal interview at their office if the first meeting works out, but for the most part, even engineers and other professionals need to be screened out for mouth-breathing morons.

That's funny, a co-worker of mine does this type of interview, and it's for high level engineering positions. They usually go for coffee. He says it's more informal and a better way to get to know someone. If they are at the interview stage, they are pretty much qualified anyways and they are looking for the best fit at that point.

I've interviewed prospective employees for intermediate and senior-level science/engineering jobs in coffee shops and similar settings. Usually it's when we've targeted someone we'd like to hire based on their technical skills/reputation and want to get an idea of their personality in a neutral, informal setting. If I like the person then we'll follow up with a more formal meeting in our office.

Not quite the same, but I'm always amazed when people want to have full personal finance discussions in public.

My first two interviews at my current law firm were at a coffee shop in the Core.
Made me nervous as it was only one block from my then-current office, and I didn't want to get busted.
The coffee shop interview is entirely to figure out fit and personality type.

Actually come to think of it, my last two jobs have had at least one interview take place in a pub over a pint.

When I see interviews being conducted in public, just to be a jerk I intentionally do things to try and distract the interviewee. Like speaking in a font color that is slightly off from the standard black by just enough to make them wonder if it's their eyes or if the color of my words is actually different.
