Default WEEK 18: BC Lions at STAMPEDERS

A nothing game perhaps? Not so according to Stampeder's players. They want to prove that they are capable of beating the BC Lions. Both teams already locked in the home playoff game. BC Lions locked in #1 in the West while Calgary locked in #2.

OFFENSE:

RB Jon Cornish won his 7th Canadian Player of Week award. Cornish won the award not because of his rushing abilities but it was because he caught 6 passes for 100 yards and scoring a TD. This is Cornish's first career 100 yards receiving. He still leads the CFL in rushing yardage with 1,302 yards in the season only 135 yards behind Normie Kwong's record by a Canadian RB. Cornish doesn't really have much success against the Lions though only rushing for 60 yards against them in 2 games.

R Nik Lewis caught 7 passes for 65 yards. Lewis raised his season totals to 95 catches (leads the CFL in that department) for 1,160 yards.

R Maurice Price caught his first TD passes as a Stampeder, a 56 yard pass from QB Kevin Glenn. In the last two games, he caught 105 yards.

QB Drew Tate is healthy again. It looks like Coach Hufnagel will give him the starting QB position for the game. Hufnagel will also give Glenn some time to play in the game.

DEFENSE:

Stampeders defense played well against Hamilton TigerCats. They registered a season-high 6 QB sacks against Henry Burris.

LB/DB Keon Raymond won the Defensive Player of the Week. He had a monster game vs Hamilton with a team-high 8 tackles, 2 QB sacks and a 100-yard INT return for a TD. Raymond holds the club record with a 117-yard return for a TD in 2011.

LB Juwan Simpson had 8 tackles and now has 78 tackles in the season. He is 6th best in the CFL.

DE Charleston Hughes had 7 tackles and 2 QB sacks against the TiCats. That brings his season tally to 10 QB sacks, 2nd in the league behind BC Keron Williams with 11.

DB Derrius Brooks had another INT last week. He now have INT in a back-to-back games. He joins Keon Raymond as the only 2 Stamps DB to pick off passes in 2nd consecutive games this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

KR Jason Armstead had a combined 251 yards on returns including an 84 yard kickoff return in the 1st quarter. He's been a good replacement for Larry Taylor. The question now will be, what will happen to Armstead when Taylor comes back from the injury?

This is the first game that K Rene Paredes had no field goal attempts this season.

Special team coverage teams did not give Chris Williams a lot of room again last week.

GAME TIME : Friday, October 26th at 7pm MDT McMahon Stadium
Game will be televised on TSN & RDS2
It will also be seen via webcast on ESPN3.

GO STAMPS GO!!!!

I see the Stamps are -3.5 point favs. Lulay must not be playing? West Conference Final should be good with BC most likely facing the Stamps.

should be a good one, Stamps need to prove to themselves they can beat the Lions, possible west final matchup preview (if the Stamps can get past whoever they face at home in two weeks). It will be interesting to see how Tate does when he goes in, hopefully they put him in fairly early.
it's times like this I wish we had an indoor stadium...brrr

Not to take away from the rest of your valid post, but I hate when people say stuff like the bolded. Especially Stamps fans. It's pretty hard for me as a 18 year season ticket holder to just assume that the odds that the Stamps will take care of the Riders in the semi-final are high enough to call this game a 'likely' Western Final preview. The Stamps haven't beat the Riders in a playoff game since 1994. That includes losses in 1997, 2006, 2007, 2009, & 2010. Most of those games the Stamps were favored and playing at home.

fair enough, i should say possible instead, although they could still play the eskimoes, not that a Stamps win in the playoffs is ever that likely, but we did sweep the eskies so far. actually an Edmonton-Calgary semi would be interesting after the two play the last game of the season. If the Stamps lose the last game it may give the Esks the 3rd spot (they have the tie breaker vs the Riders), so Edmonton would have to beat the Stamps two games in a row. the other scenario is the Stamps beat them and play Sask, in which case who knows. We will have to see what plays out this weekend first though.

edit: we plan on going to the second half (my wife isn't a big football fan and gets cold easily, so 3 hours of -7 or whatever it will be isn't an option). If the game meant something in the standings (should have been a first place battle game) I would go to the whole game

I wish I was going. Have a midterm tomorrow morning that I need to be studying for instead.

Lost in the QB stuff is the fact that the top two Canadian RBs are matching up and each one has a very strong case for Canadian Player of the Year. Personally, I'd give it to whichever one ends the year with the greatest yards from scrimmage.

Hmm, mid-term on a Saturday morning in late October/early November. Smells like Accounting 317 in Haskayne?

Glenn and Tate expected to split the first 4 series before Huff makes his decision.

Looking at the empty stands makes me wonder why they don't start the season two weeks earlier.

I think they are concerned about running into the SCF but I definitely understand what you mean. Not the nicest evening to be in the stands.
