Default The Journalism Is Dead Thread

One nonsense cover story after another; Newsweek was complete rubbish anyway. But this year? This year they've really outdone themselves, redefining "rock bottom" with each and every issue.

The top show on The Learning Channel is Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Media knows their audience.

Propaganda is alive and well. Its really tough to find news that isn't slanted to a specific interest, and the sensationalism of certain topics is getting ridiculous.

TLC hasn't referred to itself as The Learning Channel in almost 15 years.

And the story itself is exactly as messed up as you'd expect it to be:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newswee...afterlife.html

It reads like it was written by a 12-year old talking down to an 8-year old.

And the whole "I'm a neurosurgeon so y'know what I am saying must be true" angle is ridiculous.

TLC could be the grim future of PBS should Mitt Romney have his Big Bird slaying way:

Quote:
The Learning Channel was founded in 1972 by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and NASA as an informative/instructional network focused on providing real education through the medium of TV; it was distributed at no cost by NASA satellite. Then it was privatized in 1980 ... From then on we have a sad decline to the abomination of child and poverty exploitation of TLC’s current hit freak show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”.

TLC (former initialism for The Learning Channel) is an American cable TV specialty channel which initially focused on educational content.

The dumbing down of television:

Cable networks that now broadcast shows opposite to original mandate:

History Channel - Ancient Aliens
Discovery Channel - American Chopper
The Learning Channel - Here Comes Honey Boo Boo
MTV - Jersey Shore
National Geographic Channel - Wicked Tuna

The reasonable part of me wants to say that every society in every age has had it's lowest common denominator and that it hasn't changed, we're just seeing how things change as people realize that they can make tons more money by catering to them.

The reasonable part of me wants to say that that has been and will always be the way of things.

Part of me though thinks "this is how they'll say the end of our society began in 500 years".

People always complain about the degradation of media, but then consume these crappy products anyway. Hate what TLC and reality tv is doing? Stop watching it. Don't even talk about their terrible shows just to make fun of it, because that's exactly what keeps them alive.

Stop buying stupid magazines like US Weekly, People and Newsweek, even if its at the airport and you're bored. Magazines tend to print what will get readers....they don't necessarily care if you respect what's printed as long as you buy it.

Oh, also start supporting good things. Buy that magazine you respect, and watch the show you claim to think is great. There are plenty of great tv shows out there and really solid magazines too (screw Newsweek, buy the Economist).

i have a few friends who watch that garbage Toddlers & Tiaras, and who admit that it's garbage. but they keep watching because "I just can't help it, it's like watching a car wreck". so now we have a new breed of consumer who are intelligent enough to realize that what they're watching is trash, but still watch it anyways

At the risk of tarding this thread up

from the same wikipedia entry

In 1998 the channel began to distance itself from its original name "The Learning Channel", and instead began to advertise itself only as "TLC".

The Learning Channel has that, the History Channel seems to be nothing but pawning items and hunting aliens, and the Discovery Channel half the time seems to have auctions and pseudo-reality TV.

Nothing is what its name means anymore

It's nice to see that DMT trips are now worthy of the cover of Newsweek.
