Default Advice needed- Cat has chronic pancreatitis

Just wondering if anyone has experience dealing with a cat with chronic pancreatitis? Our seal point Siamese has had it for several months now and no amount of veterinarian care seems to be helping- I don't know the exact amount we have spent with vets, but I would think it has been a couple thousand at this point- different diets, tests, medication etc... Has lost quite a bit of weight over the months, is always dehydrated, and isn't eating much of anything. We have to send him in quite regularly to the vet to be re hydrated and nourished.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone else might have some advice or tips... I know it is possible to keep them going for quite some time with the condition, but it seems to be a somewhat cruel, and expensive, thing to put the cat through? I am ready to deal with the fact that we may have to put him down, but this may be a tougher sell with the wife...

ps. here is the little bugger.
Spoiler!

Went through this with my wife's cat when we dated.

It is hard, but don't keep the animal alive for you. Sometimes it is best to say goodye and let them go. Quality of Life.

Good Luck

Our cat has gone through a couple bouts but not as severe. Luckily, we have only had to take her in once for fluid *knock on wood*. Our vet said there really isn't anything you can do and trying to keep them hydrated is extremely hard in that condition. We have had some success giving the cat some tuna juice (tuna water from the can) to get the cat some water. Although there were times that she wouldn't even look at it and we had to take her in for fluid.

I'd say ask the vet flat out: Is there a reasonable chance the ailment can be cured/managed? If the answer is yes, and you're willing to eat the cost, go ahead. If the honest answer is no, put the cat down. If you're already constantly taking it to the vet, then not only is the cat extremely sick with unknown hope of recovery, but also badly stressed, which is likely not helping the first problem at all.

Thanks for the advice... looks like it is too late though. Kidneys have shut down and not much they can do. Will have to put him to sleep today.

The wife is pretty attached to him, so it might be pretty rough for her.

How did the relationship work out.

No other comments other than it sucks to have spent so much on the cat without a positive outcome

Just put my 14 year old cat down last Saturday due to this. Vet said she was probably in a lot of pain... so we let her go.

I have avoided this thread since it was posted, but for some reason felt the need to come in here tonight.

My best advice, learning from what I went through with having to my cat down, is to do what is best interest of your pet. If you feel it is time to let her go, then you should. If you feel otherwise, then keep her with you.

God damn, I miss my cat.

This year we rescued/adopted a 17 year old cat. He is in Stage 4 (end stage) kidney failure. We give him fluids (Sub Q) at home. He has had six more months of happy life by us doing this. Much cheaper and far less stressful than taking the cat back and forth to the vet.
