Default Heat sign G Barry Brust

Elite Prospects is reporting that the Heat have signed Barry Brust to an AHL contract.

He'll (presumably) be the veteran/back-up to whoever is not in Calgary between Leland Irving and Henrik Karlsson.

I suppose this means Danny Taylor is gonzo.

Unless he's not.

There is conflicting reports on this, I think it was a news article claiming Ortio was going back to Finland, then in an interview a while later the Heat's goaltending coach (I can't remember his name at the moment) said Ortio would be with Abbotsford in 12/13

As for Brust, he seems like a decent pick up. Based on his numbers alone I am pleased that has a a career AHL save percentage of .919 and with Ward's defensive system he should do just fine in that regard. He is also 25 games over .500 in his AHL career in 191 games.

Brust played for Ward for 3 seasons in Houston so there is some familiarity there.

I never thought of this, familiarity is good in this situation. I think this might also speak to the character of Brust, as Ward sent him to the ECHL in 2009-10.

Brust was also the "backup" goaltender for the Binghamton Senators when they won the Calder Cup, I put backup in quotations because despite being the backup during the post season Brust played in 51 games during the regular season due to the Lehner spent in the NHL and at the World Junior tournament.

I have seen Barry Brust in quite some games last year when he played for Straubing in Germany. He was among the better goalies of the league and seemed to elevate his game in the playoffs. Certainly a nice veteran pickup by the Heat, and the obvious Ward connection will surely help.

Unfortunately I have to say that there was a nasty incident in a playoff game against Richie Regehr's team when Brust cross-checked Berlin's forward Florian Busch. Brust was suspended by the DEL for 8 games. Unnecessary to say the least.

Berry Burst? lol.

Hey, if the guy has a bit of Hextall or Smith in him I won't complain. Not a lot of players took liberties in their crease, did they?

Based on that video you could call him "Boomer" Brust.

Spoiler!

I remember a few years ago when the LA Kings went with the rather interesting goalie tandem of Barry Brust & Yutaka Fukufuji.
