Default The Heat is on in Ottawa

The Senators have acquired winger Dany Heatley from the Tampa Bay Lightning. GM Walsh confirmed he had numerous trade discussions as he looked for a top 6 forward. There were several good offers but we feel that Dany was the best option at this time.

Headed to Tampa is winger Lee Stempniak and a first round pick. The Sens also received major cap considerations in the deal.

Thanks to Drew for the trade, all it took was 2 pms.

Like this deal for the Sens. I see Stempniak as always going to be a dime a dozen 3rd line guy where Heatley has top line potential and will always at the very least be a top notch 2nd liner.

The Tampa Perspective

Ratings wise we drop 4 ov and add a 1st round pick. We are trying to ice a competitive team but have an eye on the future as well. We just felt that from an asset management stand point this is short term pain for long term gain.

Exactly what I did last year with some of my ufa players, or like I did with Handzus last week, which ended up getting me some decent pieces that are useful this year and possibly moving forward. Decent asset management.

Pretty good now. I've got 62-63 OV players now on my 4th line, thanks directly to moves like this while having normal quality guys on my upper lines.

Stempniak is a cheaper option on the 3rd line and next year he can spend some money that he saved from losing heatley, either through trade or otherwise on guys that will replace what heatley would've contributed.
Using just that first he received could get him a guy like Olli Jokinen or similar 68 or so OV guy. For someone that's rebuilding, getting more assets is the name of the game, in order to translate them into more assets and so on until you've actually put together a semi competent team together and then you can easily just add on from there.

It's a good first step.

You have taken years to 'build' the Panthers with little results. I don't get why GM's take the rebuild approach every single year. This is a game and GM's should want to win. Make a bunch of trades, get some good players and compete!

No game has any one way of succeeding at it. Some GMs excel at trading and choose to build their team that way. However, I would point out that CPHL championships have also been won by GMs who don’t trade as much, and take a more patient approach.

As with most things, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I'm taking a stab at the rebuild approach this season and we'll see how it goes. I did the build up approach going into last season, and I had a very good team until I started to take it apart in December. Honestly, I'm enjoying the prospect angle of the game more then I did the building of a team around established players. not sure why that is, maybe its the 'predictive' nature of prospect that makes it more challenging.

Either way, I totally get where you are coming from. A true rebuild in a sim league will take YEARS given the nature of ratings etc.The goal of the game should be to win...but not everyone plays that way, and its not just in terms of a rebuild. How many teams in the league are constructed as fantasy rosters instead of sim orientated rosters? probably more then the other way around.

Having the variety of teams taking different approaches is what gives this league the balance it needs. Not sure its fair to knock anyone for there approach as long as they have one and are actively executing it.

Agreed. Maybe my thinking will change if the Hawks have limited success this season. But my feeling is, I want to win some games now, not 2 to 3 years from now.

I'm trying to build the Panthers, not only into a playoff team, but a top team like philly or montreal. I have enough depth on my farm teams that I could easily acquire a couple top D-men, and a proper starter as well as another scorer or two. However, to me, that's boring. I'd rather build my team so I have good players in every one of my 64 roster spots instead of sacrificing one group of players for another. That will come, just a matter of time, patience and being opportunistic.

In the other sim league that I was in recently (the other calgarypuck league), I built my team to be a top team from the get go and was dominant and eventually sailed through the playoffs and won. Being a top team for a short time is relatively easy. Doing it this way is more challenging. In the past I've employed a few different methods to build things well, and each one was ultimately successful. Trying out different strategies is part of what makes this interesting to me.

I've also made sure that I've never selected in the 1st round as an additional added level of difficulty just to make my scouting process a little more challenging in order to really look for diamonds in the rough as they all have huge holes in their games. It'd be way too easy to get a Landeskog, Yakupov, Seguin, and wait.

Everybody finds enjoyment in this doing things in their own ways and for me this is fun. Plus oddly enough elements from my rebuild in the CPHL has helped my skill level with my work as well so it's been very beneficial in more than one way.
